That's the speed limit of the road that you are travelling on, and nothing to do with the Speed Cameras (or any other) POIs. I'm sure the route to the setting, and the exact name, will differ depending on model, but you're looking for something like "Status bar preferences" and "Show max speed next to speed".

You're mostly right, Jock... It usually does show the speed limit for the road you're on (taken from the map data)
But in fact, if you are using TomTom's own speed camera database, that speed limit icon DOES change when you are approaching a camera, to reflect the logged speed associated with the camera.
Normally you can only tell if you look closely, because the icon changes size slightly - it's slightly larger for the speed cams.
But once in a while if a camera has been put in the database with the wrong speed (or the road speed itself is wrong on the map) then you'llsee it change completely.
