|
|
Hi to all, I'am new to handheld gps and found this foroum searching the internet searching for a sollution for a problem I have.
My Dakota 20 handheld won't load some routes and I don't know why, for example this route http://www.hellaspath.gr/misc/pt2gpx.php?trk_id=76
some routes are loaded ok, some not.
Any idea what's wrong?
Thanx in advance for any replies.

That's a track not a route but it loads fine onto my PC. If you've been looking for it in Route Manager rather than Track Manager that will explain why you don't see it. It also has quite a long file name, I'm not sure if the Dakota will cope with that so if you can't find it in Track Manager either try a shorter name. |

Sorry for my bad English but it's not my native language. You are right, I meant "track" and not "route".
I discovered that the Dakota can load tracks from
http://en.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/home.do
but can't load tracks from this site
http://www.hellaspath.gr/index.php?p=2
is there an explanation for this? something in the .gpx file perhaps? |

That track you posted worked fine for me, have you tried entering it with a shorter name? |

Well I found out this,
it has something to do with the character encoding of the .gpx file.
Name length is ok in all cases, it's ok to have a long lenghted name.
Now I understand I have to change something in Dakota settings menu that has to do with character encoding or language (my prefered language is English though), any idea; |

Sorry no, not heard of that before.
The track you posted works fine in Basecamp. Why don't you try loading it into Basecamp (available here http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4435 ) and then send it from Basecamp to your Dakota? |

That track you posted worked fine for me, in Memory-Map on the PC.
But it would not show up in my Oregon handheld, no matter how I renamed it.
When I sent it from Memory-Map to the Oregon it worked fine.
If I open the two files in Excel, I see that the one that works in the Oregon has far fewer columns. All of the Bounds columns are absent, as are the columns for Time and Trk/Desc. There are other smaller differences as well, which I can itemise if necessary.
Hope this helps.

I doubt if it's anything to do with character encoding.
I cleared the contents of column N (which was all Greek) and the track still wouldn't display.
I changed the language of the Oregon to Greek, and the track still wouldn't display. (I then had the task of navigating a menu in Greek, to reset it back to English!!).
I think the easy answer is to pass the track through BaseCamp or Memory-Map, down to your Dakota.

Well I use Ubuntu Linux so BaseCamp or Memory-Map are not compatible with my system.
But I solved the problem, here is how.
the first line of the file mustn't be
?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-7" ?
but must be
?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?
to show the titles that are in Greek letters |

so, each time I want to load a track to my Dakota I will have to edit the first line as above.
It's ok for me, quite fair I think |
