|
|
Hi All,
I've been using a Garmin 3490LMT with Full European coverage for a few months now, and have found it to be generally pretty good.
The Voice Command functionality is excellent - or at least it was.
I applied a mapping update in late November, and ever since then, if I use the "Find Place" voice command the unit shuts down (if on external power, it reboots).
I have been in correspondence with Garmin support, who have told me that this is a known issue which they are trying to resolve (for 3 months?? ).
Yesterday I was told that there was an update which would fix the problem.
I applied it, and it made no difference.
What I would like to know is whether anybody else is having this issue with one of these units.
Any feedback appreciated.
Cheers! _________________ Robin

Often after a map or software update you will get glitches like this, what you should try is a hard reset as that should cure it |

Thanks for the feedback sussamb - I have done a reboot, a device reset, in fact everything but a full Factory Reset.
What exactly do you mean by "hard reset"? _________________ Robin

So you do mean Factory Reset.
Tried it, no effect, but thanks for the suggestion. _________________ Robin

In that case I'd give Garmin a call. |

Thanks again for the advice sussamb - I did actually state in my original post that I'm already in touch with Garmin.
Getting slightly mixed messages from them as to whether it's a software issue or device fault.
Would still be interested to hear if anyone else is having similar issues with this model. _________________ Robin

Yes I understand that, but as you've now applied the software update they said would fix it and after a hard reset with no improvement call them again ... as my money is now on a hardware fault. |

Fair enough.
Latest info is to check versions of updaters and suchlike, try one more update, then they'll replace it.
Guess that'll prove once and for all whether it's a faulty unit! _________________ Robin

This was an issue with my 3590 however I can confirm it was fixed in the last firmware update.
I would be fairly sure this is not a hardware issue if only this search option resulted in a crash |

Thanks for the feedback Ian.
I totally agree with you - I am totally convinced that this problem is way too specific to be a hardware fault, but I've tried every update, install and reinstall that Garmin suggested without success.
After trying the factory reset suggested by sussamb the command actually worked (once) while the device was trying to establish it's initial GPS fix - then it went back to shutting it down.
I personally suspect some kind of memory management issue - all of the maps and programs install in main storage and don't leave much spare for expansion (or workspace?), but Garmin disagree.
If they do replace it and the problem resurfaces on a new unit, at least I'll have eliminated one possible cause
BTW - which firmware version is your 3590 on now? _________________ Robin

Hi
I have checked again with and without a GPS lock and the find place voice command is fine, previously it would reboot 100% of the time.
Current firmware is 7.60

Can't say I've had this specific problem with my 3490LMT. The odd reboot yes but not on the voice command you mention although I only use voice command about 30% of the time.
If you got your 3590 from Halfords then they should be able to swap it over there and then for a brand new unit (they'll log a call with Garmin first). Otherwise, if you send off to Garmin, you may well get a refurbished unit, even if yours is fairly new.
Personally I'd steer clear of returning the unit as you don't know how old or what issues a refurbed unit had (very rare you will get a brand new item). If your unit works fine otherwise I'd isolate the issue and type in the commands. _________________ DriveLuxe 51 LMT D - Firmware 6.80

I had exactly this problem when I did the first map/firmware update on my brand new 2595. I repeated the update process and the problem seemed to disappear, but it's now back. It will get as far as saying "Say the name of a place" and will then shut down.
I'm on software version 7.5, so I'll try updating it later and see if that has any effect. |

|

This is now getting REALLY confusing:
I reinstalled the maps as per Garmin's instructions using MapUpdater V3.1.20.
I'm quite sure that was the version I had used previously, but tried it anyway.
I can also confirm that I'm on firmware 7.60.
Now we get to the interesting part:
I performed a Factory Reset after the update, and the "Find Place" voice command worked!!!
Then it didn't, then it did, then it didn't.... The command is now working intermittently.
Sometimes it says "Say the name of a place" then reboots.
Sometimes it lets me say the name and then reboots.
Sometimes it actually finds places (yay!).
The only pattern I've found so far is that if I tell it to find place near destination, it crashes if my destination is more than about 15 miles away.
I've also noticed that the spinning hourglass (wait icon) tends to go very slowly, and sometimes freezes altogether.
All of the above tends to imply that it isn't a hardware fault - I still suspect a memory management issue.
(In my experience, memory shortages and/or corruption are the usual causes of sudden system shutdowns). _________________ Robin
