|
|
A Manchester City football player, Carlos Tevez, got a six-month driving ban because he ignored a police notice asking him for drivers’ details after his Hummer was recorded speeding by two speed cameras.
The 28 year old Argentine striker claimed he did not understand the letters were from the police as they were marked "Constabulary", a word he was apparently unfamiliar with as he reportedly only speaks Spanish.
He was consequently prosecuted for failing to let police know who was driving his car when it was flashed speeding past the cameras in Morecambe, Lancs and Cheshire, Manchester.
His lawyer told the court that the footballer's failure to provide details was not deliberate. Tevez, who apparently was not at the wheel on both occasions, pleaded guilty to failing to provide details of the incidents and a further offence of driving without a UK licence.
He also received a £1,465 fine.

Good. If you're going to live here, have the decency to learn the language.
I'm pretty sure numeric digits are the same in Spain as they are here so there's no excuse not to adhere to the speed limit in the first place, "I'm a foreign football player that earns lots and lots of money" is NOT an excuse and shame on the lawyer for trying that one. |

Just like all those ex-pat Brits who've retired to Spain do? _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

If you don't understand an official-looking letter, or any letter in fact, for whatever reason (be it not speaking/reading that language or something like dyslexia) then surely a sensible person would ask someone to translate it? Oh, wait, I said 'sensible' when referring to a footballer...

It's good to see that his undoubtedly 'high priced' solicitor didn't manage to find a loop hole to get him off _________________ Galaxy Note 4 / TomTom GO : CamerAlert : CoPilot |

"He was not at the wheel" So it's not that he doesn't understand numbers on road signs.
He was fined for failing to provide the information requested.
As has been said, surely you ask some one, even if they then say "It's a scam" (Like a lot of 'official looking' letters can be...) |

Does anyone ever believe everything (anything?) a defence solicitor says in mitigation of their clients during a guilty plea hearing? |

Tevez is on about £250k PER WEEK! I'm not sure if he pays tax on that either so as has been said he could afford to employ someone to assist him in understanding. No doubt he will now employ a chauffer.

He also pleaded guilty to driving without a UK licence - what's the use of a ban? _________________ Dennis
