|
|
This is for a Nuvi 30/40/50
All I want to do is reset the trip log:
Unbelievable !!!!!
Quote: | Note: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favourites and will
restore your unit to the default factory settings. If you would like to
back up your favourites you can find instructions to do so below.
1. Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power
2. Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index
finger or the eraser end of a pencil
3. Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the
screen then power the unit ON *
4. Release the power button when the device powers ON
You will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?
5. Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays
6. Touch Yes
The device will automatically reset. Follow the on screen prompts then
place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it
acquires satellites.
Backing your user data up is only possible if you have a unit that can
go into mass storage when connected to a PC or MAC.
Instructions for a PC:
1. Connect the Garmin device to a computer using a data transfer USB
cable.
2. Double-click on My Computer or Computer.
3. Right-click on the Garmin device drive and select Open.
4. Locate and double-click the GPX Folder.
Some devices require you to open the folder named "Garmin" or "Internal
Storage" first, then the GPX Folder.
5. Right-click and copy the Current.gpx file.
6. Locate your computer's Desktop.
7. Right-click and select Paste to save the Current.gpx file onto your
Desktop.
To send the file back to the GPS, please follow the steps below:
1. Right-click on the Current.gpx file on your Desktop and select
Rename.
2. Name the file Current1.gpx and then press Enter.
3. Right-click on the Current1.gpx file and select Copy.
4. Connect your device to your computer.
5. Double-click on My Computer or Computer.
6. Right-click on the Garmin device drive and select Open.
7. Locate and double-click the GPX Folder.
Some devices require you to open the folder named "Garmin" or "Internal
Storage" first, then the GPX Folder.
8. Right-click and select Paste.
9. Disconnect your device from your computer and allow it to boot up.
Some devices do not automatically boot up. If your device does not
automatically boot up, turn the device on as normal.
Your favourites will now be restored on your device. To transfer the
saved Favourites from one mass storage device to another, connect the
new device to the computer in Step 4 and then follow the remainder of
the steps.
Instructions for a Mac:
1. Connect the Garmin device to the Mac using a data transfer USB cable.
2. Double-click on the Garmin device when you see it mounted to the
Desktop.
3. Locate and double-click the GPX Folder.
Some devices require you to open the folder named "Garmin" first, then
the GPX Folder.
4. Right-click1 and copy the Current.gpx file.
5. Right-click1 on your Mac's Desktop and select Paste to save the
Current.gpx file onto the Desktop.
To send the file back to the GPS:
1. Right-click1 on Current.gpx file on your Desktop and select Get Info.
2. Under Name & Extension, rename the file Current1.gpx and press Enter.
3. Right-click1 on the Current1.gpx file and select Copy.
4. With Garmin device connected to the Mac, double-click on the Garmin
Drive.
5. Locate and double-click the GPX Folder.
Some devices require you to open the folder named "Garmin" first, then
the GPX Folder.
6. Right-click1 and paste the Current1.gpx file into the GPX folder on
your Garmin device.
Your favourites will now be restored on your device. To transfer the

Yep, for some reason Garmin have removed the ability to easily clear the trip log, why I have no idea. On other units Tools, My data, Clear trip log does the job |

Whilst I'm enjoying the larger screen and the improved Sirf chip sensitivity from the old 2200, I think I maybe shouldn't have dived in at basement level ! _________________ Satnav:

TBH, apart from the Trip Log everything else is OK as I have a built in SatNav with reliable traffic so I just wanted this for the cameras.
The current road speed indicator is a bonus.
Main SatNav above central air vents, Garmin just visible behind steering wheel, Mobile phone down by handbrake:

A master reset will not erase everything on your device, or it didn't in my case when resolving the live services issue with garmin.
When i plugged the device back into my computer all the information was still on the device |

I think it's fairer to say that a master reset may not erase everything on your device.
What it generally does is clear all user settings and favourites etc, but it's possible that favourites may be retained, depending on the Garmin model you have and the way you've installed/saved favourites.
Best to take the precautions outlined by Garmin just in case |

I've decided not to bother. On my 2200 I used to clear the 'breadcrumbs' every month or so but that seems too much hassle.
I'll just keep the log of where I went since I've had the device. _________________ Satnav:

plug device into pc and iirc there is a folder on it (hidden) which contains a csv file of your trips (also for when you fill up if you use eco bit of the satnav)
could delete these and see if it what happens |

That's my sort of fix
I'll do a PC backup and have a dig around the files.
If that is the answer I'll write a PC program to do it automatically.
Hopefully I'll have some time Wednesday _________________ Satnav:

Love to hear if that works, I don't believe it's that simple
I think you'll find that the 'trip log file' is in inaccessible memory somewhere. You will be able to delete any archived trip files, but you'll find those in the GPX folder and not in the hidden .system folder. |

I did a complete 'Windows' backup when I first got it so I'll run a file compare to see which one(s) have grown in size. _________________ Satnav:

It seems that the Trip Log data is stored in the Current.GPX file.
I've found a utility that displays info at:
http://www.gpsinformation.org/ronh/g7towin.htm
Next step is to download the file from the unit as it stands now and see what's in it.
My initial backup only shows the 3 Garmin offices so I know what a base file looks like.
I have a feeling that Current.GPX is stored in memory somewhere and the Current.GPX gets recreated everytime you boot up with it's contents when you last shutdown so clearing this file will do no good. _________________ Satnav:
