Halfords are currently selling the Nuvi 40LM with Western Europe maps and Lifetime Updates for £99.99. There are a number of additional features over my (very) old Nuvi 200 so I'm thinking of upgrading.

Does anyone have any long term experience of the 40LM? Any and all comments would be appreciated (positive or negative) before I splash the cash Smile

One thing that may or not matter to you, the new nuvis that don't have route/trip planner like the 30/40/50 can only have one via point in a route. If you're used to have 2 or 3 vias in a route on your 200 then you may find that restricting.

I agree.

The 30/40/50 are seen as entry level models and are just the basic kit.

The only thing I do miss over the 2200 is the auto destination detection. It used to make a good guess at where I was going (without a route planned) and tell me the minutes to go. Plus it was actually quite accurate once it learned the average.

One advantage the 50 has over the 220 is the GPS chip is more sensitive. At work I park under the building. The 2200 used to warn me of "Lost Satellite...." quite early but the 50 keeps on tracking me for quite a bit longer.

Thanks for both those comments. I'm only used to having one via point anyway, and rarely use that, so ongoing absence is unlikely to bother me too much. The advantages over my current unit would be the wider screen, spoken street names and lane indication. Also the map updates would be easier as currently my unit only has UK & NI 'onboard'. The Europe maps are on an sd card which means a double update process.

I've read some user reviews which mention the unit freezes occasionally. I've never experienced that myself so don't know if it's a general Garmin issue or the users have just been unluucky.

Hello All

My son, who is SatNav innocent, has just been given a 40LM for his birthday. He is unsure whether to keep it or seek a refund (box still sealed) On checking various sites/comments, it appears to have only 2D mapping whereas, the box (and other, similar models) tend to display 3D mapping as does the Garmin website. I would appreciate any useful comments on the machine, and installed maps.

TIA.

I guess you mean 3D view? Personally I never use it, I prefer the 2D view, but the setting to change it is at Settings, Map.

See page 20 of the manual:

My 50 has 2D or 3D mapping so I'd be surprised if the 40 didn't have the option.
