Hi Guys
Anyone noticed the overpricing of TomToms HD Traffic service
For TomTom Customers its £47.99 for a year
The same data is also provided by TomTom to Sygic for use on their new Navigation Software v12 and Sygic only Charge £9.99 for a Year.
My do TomTom customers have to pay so much more than Sygic's Customers for the same data.

Yes, but the Sygic offering does not work very well, constantly giving zero delay for most traffic events.  |

Are you quoting for their old traffic traffic service or the new tomtom one, if its the same data then it should be the same info, although to be honest I have not yet given mine much of a go as I don't like the routing provided by sygic and much prefer to us my TomTom but refuse to pay their silly asking price for traffic, prefer to wait for their special offers like £9.99 for the Summer which is the only time I need a working traffic service as I don't go far during the winter months.

Same data but I speculate very different business models. Sygic only produce apps for iOS and Android whereas TomTom also produce dedicated satnav units, and developing hardware is expensive.
Also a company will tend to charge what the market will bear. For those TomTom users who drive a lot then £48 per year probably doesn't look too bad. |

'Should' is the opereative word here. TT Live Traffic shows delays wher thed Sygic version, although showing the event shows zero delay for most of the time. There has been loads of posts about this on the Sygic forum, but no definitive answer is forthcoming as yet Here's the thread, you have to 'view archived'. |

This is a bit like saying you can get internet connection for £4.99/month or you could pay £24.99/month.
You usually get what you pay for.
Pay less, you get less.

There is a SIM card in the 750 Live which gets the info over the Vodafone network...

Having checked the data delivery amount of the 'same' data on Sygic, the actual amount of data is very small so would not cost much even if it wasn't included in your data allowance and the data itself costs a very reasonable £9.99/year So it seems like TT are charging a lot extra for their data and data delivery. Shame Sygic's traffic doe not actually work better. |

This traffic charge makes me chuckle in a way.
My built in unit uses RDS TMC and it's absolutely free of charge via any subscribing radio station, normally classic FM.
In my case it's been 100% reliable (since 2007), never dropped out, and has kept me out of trouble quite a few times.

But TT HD Traffic *is* supposed to cover more roads and more incident types than RDS-TMC does.
But I can understand how it's difficult to judge the difference unless you have both systems available in the car at the same time on two different units.

Indeed, the TMC traffic is like most of the low-end reports - they are good if the incident is fresh, but poor due to the incident typically remaining for some hours after it ends. We used to sail through "hours" of delay on the old system. HD Traffic is up to the minute (ish) and much better for accuracy. Not comparable.
The big pity is that both Google and Apple licence the data, but not for re-routing. I presume this is cost, but it makes their navigation much less interesting.
I wonder if the cheap system is also not allowed to use it for re-routing. That would explain the cost, and the fact that it doesn't have any delay info. The cheap feed wouldn't have that, only the speed. Just theorising... |

It's a fascinating subject. I do indeed run both, side by side on different devices and see differences most of the time. Two factors affect them -
1. Being different devices, they have different Navcores.
2. They have different ranges, both distance ahead and amount of cover.
So to be honest, I do a bit of dithering over whether or not to believe either or both of them!! It doesn't help if Radio 5 Live is between half-hourly reports.
