|
|
I read somewhere that TMC Traffic data can be obtained by using GPRS from a mobile rather than using the traditional aerial on the screen.
Can someone please give a short description of how this is done, whether it is any better than using the aerial, and whether it works with an antique phone like a Nokia 6310i?
Thank you. |

This was the old TomTom PLUS service.
I don't think it works any more. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

TomTom Traffic still exists and cost £29.95 per year for the service plus the cost of the GPRS data from your mobile provider. It does work on the 6310 with a Go530.

I used to have the GPRS traffic service on my 930 until I bought the Go1000 which has Live services.
The GPRS traffic worked very well and was much better than the bit of wire.
If you have a smartphone with Google Maps traffic you will sometimes find it better than Live Services and the GPRS Traffic service.
I use both Google Maps and TomTom Live traffic as sometimes one of the traffic services is better than the other. _________________ GO 620, Tomtom Android EU,

I do now...
For some reason I thought it had been dropped fairly recently. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

But is that camera service over GPRS?
My first instinct would be to assume that was the "download via Home/MyTomTom" version.
Or does that version do fixed cams via Home and mobiles "over the air"? _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

I dunno. But my understanding was you bought Live Services as a full package and couldn't cherry pick parts of it, so I assumed this was the GPRS service. Prior to the latest fiasco with Search/Places I would have said I'd be happy to cherry pick Google Search and MAYBE HD Traffic (but not sure).
The latest avowal from TT Staffers (Ditte) is that ALL Live devices now receive updates over the air, fixed and mobile - PC connection is now only required for non-live devices. _________________ Dennis

Confusing isn't it?
Now I've been put straight about the GPRS Plus Services still working,
I think that means there are three different sorts of Traffic -
1. LIVE and
2. GPRS (using a mobile phone)
2. RDS-TMC using a dedicated receiver
So are there THREE different Speed Camera services?
1. LIVE,
2. GPRS (using mobile phone) and
3. Home/MyTomTom download (for models with no LIVE SIM or Bluetooth for phone connection)
(Edited to add RDS-TMC) _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

I've just connected my 550 Live to Home and it downloaded Premium Speed Cameras United Kingdom, version 23497, size 108 KB.
As to whether it also gets speed camera downloads OTA as well I couldn't say one way or the other. I've not noticed any obvious downloading OTA on my 550 for a while, but who knows? 108 KB doesn't seem very much data so it could be included in that data chatter you hear when the PND is first connecting to HD Traffic. |

Yes, I too have received a camera download via Home to my 550. But I have deliberately not connected for quite some time in order to get some idea about this OTA - I hAve to say I don't believe it. I've never seen any signs of downloading and certainly it tells me it won't give me fuel prices, that I have to connect to Home for them.
I don't intend to connect to Home for ages - trouble is, how do I know if they've done new or changed cameras OTA? I think I have to wait until the Specs at Bristol M4/M5 come down - they've got some, not very accurate, but if at some time in the future they take them off without me connecting, that'll prove it. DON'T HOLD YOUR BREATH - these roadworks are scheduled until maybe April and we have some experience of TT's track record of slow catch-ups. _________________ Dennis

Here's a little-known nugget of information.
According to a TomTom tech, the colour of the square "report" icon on the left of the screen as you approach a speed camera should tell you!
Blue camera icon =OTA, Grey camera icon=Ov2 (safety cam files).
Now, on my NAV3 models, the blue is very definite but I'm not sure if've ever seen a grey one!
And on my NAV2 models, the only icons I've seen are always grey (or is it possibly just a much duller shade of blue! )
Clear as mud.... _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |
