Has no one noticed that

- Apple have dropped google
- Tomtom have dropped google

Maybe there are things going on behind the scenes with google and these two major tech companies that the public simply don't know about. For all we know, Google could have demanded unreasonable terms or excessive remuneration for their services, and Apple and Tomtom chose not to accept.

Lets not all assume here that Tomtom simply 'chose' to do away with Google to annoy us all and have a bit of perspective here.

I agree that it is an advertised service to use google on the devices, so not fair for those who bought a LIVE sub to use google. But, I have an iPhone and and iPad along with 2 LIVE devices. I have never used the Tomtom google search, that's in 5 years of owning one. Much rather use my iPhone or iPad to search for somewhere then enter the address myself.

Steven

Ah well, I don't have anything BUT the TomTom to play with.....

So the Google search on it was very, very useful to me.

...and, to date, the TT Local search is just not good enough to replace it.

falkirk81, I totally accept that TT may have had no choice. But it's the removal of a service and replacement with something totally useless, with no acknowledgement of the problems and no offer of compensation, that should really get people worked up (not the total £££ but the attitude issue).

I've been in touch with TT via e-mail - I just might, for others' amusement, post the dialogue here. So far, it's been totally predictable on their side (oh gosh sir, we love our customers, honest we do, we listen to them and obey..by the way, sod off, no compensation for you, not even a token amount)

I agree with the many posters who feel that the removal of the Google Search facility is beyond the pail.

Are Tom Tom trying to self destruct?

Has anyone seen an announcement or explanation from TomTom as to their reasoning?

I will now have to seriously consider my options, but the first will be to not renew my subscription for Live services, as they are becoming increasingly unreliable, as my TomTom seems reluctant to connect via the Sim on many occasions. The removal of Google Search is the final straw.

If you read these posts, Tom Tom, I am an extremely annoyed and dissatisfied (ex) customer!!

Today I did a delivery to Oxygen House, Exeter Business Park, EX1 3LH. After setting the route by Postcode, I asked Places to find Oxygen House, Near my Destination. Nothing found.

I've just done the same with Google and got a map pinpoint and a picture of the building. Nuff said.

Parked outside a very large TESCO store -- decided to try the search and asked for TESCO -- the nearest one was 9 miles away the next 26... nuf said I think -- when they cant find a place when you are sitting outside!!!

Bet TESCO would be mad if I drove to the next store!!!!

Same here with the Co-Op

I have one at the end of my road, but the nearest one the TomTom Local Search knows about is 1.9 miles away.

Needless to say, Google Local used to find my local one straight away (AND it usually told me their addresses on the results page too... TT Local doesn't do that either Evil or Very Mad )

Only if it was s ASDA! Twisted Evil

I don't have any 'Live' services so am relatively unaffected by this "upgrade" but I do sympathise with those who are. It could be worse though - you could have upgraded to iOS6 on your iDevice too! Razz

Do the PGPSW POIs fare any better at finding these Tesco & Co-op stores?

Looks like the final nail in the coffin has arrived.... My 940 is probably nearing the end of it's hardware life anyway.

Listen, Tom Tom, I do NOT like being told that unless I allow data to be collected from me, I will not be able to use the live services I paid for, and if other's experiences are anything to go by, the local search is no match for Google, (that I used almost every day, despite the slow start up time of live services). (I just had the upgrade forced on me today).

I am willing to learn a new way to use a satnav (Different vendor). Are YOU willing to learn a different job, when your trade falls to zero as a result of annoying your customers?

My first satnav was a TT700. Brilliant, never failed, I sold it on, and it is still working. I then had a 910, a 540 and a 940, all of which continually got upgraded, sometimes enforced, and all of which became progressively less reliable, upgrades failing, crashing in use, etc.

Sorry, but the time has come, and I DO have an iphone 4S with IOS5, so I can use that until I have learned a different PND.

Regards (to the forum, but my thoughts are less favourable to Tom Tom)

Stan.

Cheers, Stan, I followed the same disappointing route (albeit with many more models, but the 300 and two 700s were far and away the best).

BUT DON'T UPGRADE THE 4S to iOS 6 - the maps are no longer Google and don't have StreetView. Evil or Very Mad

Seems Tom Tom knew in June 2011 they were going to drop Google

http://thenextweb.com/google/2011/06/20/tomtom-replaces-google-with-launch-of-local-search-engine-for-devices/

Before we get too judgemental, for all we know Google may have been trying to screw TomTom. TT would certainly have been daft not to have had a plan B. It is a real blow to their product though, they are trading solely on the (admitedly vast) superiority of HD and sooner or later someone will come up with as good a way of doing that.

Sad rule in life: nothing lasts forever

Thanks, Dennis... I have a nasty little mark on the settings icon my iphone, insisting it has to have an operating system upgrade.

It won't be getting that any time soon. Best 'phone I ever had, so no reason to alter it. Tomtom has seen to that. (I am now very "cagey" re upgrades to equipment that is working very well, as I want it.....).

The latest enforced upgrade "broke" the bluetooth connection to the phone, although deleting everything and letting it be found again did work.

I am hoping "local search" works OK, but if it does not, then it will be the iphone that saves the day.

Regards,

Stan.
