Tom Tom Go 720 Change Or Update Map?

Hi Everyone..

Hope you can assist me here? I have The Tom Tom Go 720 Details and specs below..

I was a coach driver for years and during that time I used two sat navs that I still have in great condition. one of them being the original Go Classic.. and none of them have ever let me down.

I have been off the driving for nearly 2years now, but have now decided to take my test to be an LGV driver..

So here we go do I change my Go 720 for one of these newer tom tom models or do I just update maps? Would I gain anything? Are the maps the same that are available for my 720 that are on the latest models?

Has the maps or tech changed yet towards the LGV driver?

Unless you want the LIVE features, HD Traffic etc then keep your 720, it was IMO one of the best.

Update the maps and you're good to go.

The only other thing to consider, given the move to LGV, is a solution designed for that purpose. Navevo's ProNav is gaining a lot of supporters in the transport sector and with good reason.

You'll lose some of the polish but you'll have the ability to enter your vehicle weight, height, length etc and have routes that cater for it. Plus truck stops, truck laybys etc.

TomTom have TRUCK versions of their products but they aren't as focussed as a ProNav.

Thanks Darren,

Will there be enough room on my 720 for latest map? Or will I have to buy an SD Card? if so any recommendations?

Im assuming then that maps are updated through Tom Tom Home? Its a bit confusing for me anyway! Map zones and all that..

I remember a few years ago that I had problems with a friends unit using tom tom home! Not enough room and having to remove map before installation of new one, Is this still ongoing?

I take then that HD traffic is good compared to the long cable I used to stick to my windscreen?

Pro Nav great price going to read review..

You will need a memory card of at least 4GB in capacity, the device supports the SDHC type of memory card up to and including 32GB in capacity. Get a high speed card, assuming its an SDHC style card you need at least Class 6 for reliable performance, the higher the number the faster the card.
Don't bother with a Class 10 card for a TomTom though as this would be the same as feeding a pig with a diet of fresh strawberries, simply a waste of your hard earned cash.

With a 4GB card you will be able to put a single map covering all of Europe in the same way your device covered countries when it was purchased new. Without the memory card you will be restricted to whatever zone you choose, and whilst you can download all four zones its a PITA the swap them about.

HD Traffic is better than the RDS-TMC unit you are using BUT, its not perfect and not worth the subscription charge IMHO - Mike

So insert new sd card and go to tom tom home and update??

Im assuming then that the old map will still be on the internal memory?

Will the sd card need app before updated maps?

And Ill go for a 4gb SDHC card of at least Class 6 and my 720 will support that?

Copy everything from the device to the computer then copy it all to the new 4GB SDHC card using Windows Explorer.
Pop the card in to the device and switch it on, let it boot up then switch it off, put the card in to a card reader and use Home_2 to update the Navcore (software) to the latest version which is 8,351 then use Home_2 to purchase and install a new map to the memory card. Once its loaded the map simply pop the card in to the nav unit and use the device.

Doing the upgrade in the way I have detailed above avoids a known issue where Home_2 stupidly tries to load the map to the internal memory of the device even when you have selected the SDHC card as the destination.

A 4GB SDHC card will be fine for the device to use, class 6 is about the fastest card that the device can make use of, any faster and you won't really notice any improvement - Mike

So if I am copying all to new memory card the old map is still there??

Any point to that?

No, once you're sure the entire map is on the sdhc card, you can remove the old map folder from internal.

But.........

If you have any custom ov2 files on the old map, make sure you copy them to the new map on the sdhc card before dumping the old map folder from internal.

Hi, Sorry to resurrect this topic,but is this still current advice? for updating maps,because I think this is the clearest info.I have seen(I understand it all !!!)At the moment I am in limbo with the latest offer from Tom Tom---new map and 1 year update for £16odd--And when I do get a result I want to be sure that I do my end OK.
