Hi! We see you’re using an ad-blocker. We’re fine with that and won’t stop you visiting the site.
But as we’re losing ad-revenue from this then why not make a donation towards website running costs?. Or you could disable your ad-blocker for this site. We think you’ll find our adverts are not overbearing!

I'm Sure Dennis doesn't mean this
Neither I nor any other member knows who is and who isn't a subscriber - only those (four or five) identified as "Team" have that information. I have never seen anybody point out that a subs bleater and whinger is a non-subscriber. Nor has anybody on this thread been pointed out as a non-subscriber, despite the subject being subs (well, free membership, same thing).
However, as you have just apparently conceded the information that you are not a subscriber, could you perhaps comment on the basic reason for this whole topic - Darren's request in the newsletter for people to subscribe. I think your comments on that and why you don't subscribe might be informative - perhaps you would make suggestions on how to encourage people to subscribe, what would persuade you to subscribe. Seriously, I really would like to hear any non-subscriber's comments and yours I'm sure would be especially valuable - from the number of your posts, you have obviously taken an active part in the site, but not been tempted to support it financially. After all, if the site goes bust, you will lose access to the free stuff.
I am a Lifer, a Moderator AND a Verifier. During my recent holiday abroad, I submitted and/or verified all the cameras I could (somewhere around 30 I think - MaFt could tell us). For no reward. If and when "they" bring forward a method for me to do so which doesn't involve PayPal, I shall promptly take up a recurring, FULL subscription, not a donation. I would have done so back in the days when subscriptions were first introduced, but I have a phobia about some aspects of New Technology, Paypal, e-bay and Facebook being prime examples. _________________ Dennis

As I said earlier I have been a subscriber since the start of subscription but have never once used PayPal, in fact it is only within the last 6 months that I acquired a PayPal account, so payment via other means is and has always been available.
What shows up on my debit card bank statement is "Nochex"
I don't use a Credit card as I don't either want to pay excess charges or decrease the payment to PGPSW.
Hope I haven't missed the point over payment options, or hope it helps with informing other people of the different payment option.
Edit:
Slight text change

Funnily enough, this morning over my coffee in bed (yeah, nearly even pipe and slippers too!!), I was looking at the site on my iPad and for some New Technology reason I wasn't logged in. So out of interest I looked at the option of subscribing and gave up very quickly, but I THINK I didn't have an option to subscribe under my existing membership ID. Perhaps "they" can tell me if that is so. Debit card would be my preferred option too. _________________ Dennis

Thinking about it and looking again OPTION 2: always makes me think twice and seems to imply only being able to pay by Credit Card which some people may not have or want to use.
Maybe the wording could be looked at and possibly changed just to "Use this option" or Pay by "Credit Card or Debit Card"
As we know it is the intelligent software that detects the correct numbers that go with Debit or Credit Cards that determines the type of actual payment once clicking on that option.
Sorry to go off topic. _________________ (If it ain't broke, I can soon fix it)

I can quite see why lifetime free subscriptions would eventually become unsustainable. My suggestion would be for all "lifers" to pay a reduced subscription, rather than 1 or 2 years' free. I would think that should be workable in terms of administration. It would certainly be far preferable to the service going under, due to lack of funding. If this has been brought up before, apologies, I didn't spot it on a trawl through the comments. _________________ Chris B

Sorry, Dennis, I hadn't appreciated the difference. I assumed Darren used the word "donation" because it was voluntary, rather than giving the option to pay at a reduced rate which would, I should have thought, cause administrative difficulties.
Like others who have commented, I am a 70-year-old pensioner classed as being in fuel poverty, and only drive around 5,000 miles a year, mostly on regular routes, but I would happily pay the full subscription. If I can find annual running costs of around £1,500 for my car I'm sure I can include 38p in my weekly budget to cover the £19.99 yearly subscription to the camera database, and so avoid the unexpected expense of a £60 fine for inadvertently straying over the speed limit in the vicinity of a camera. _________________ Anita

That's what I thought you were getting at Dennis.
As for me, I haven't 'conceded' that I am not subscribing at the mo, I just stated it as a fact (a subtle difference I think between being 'caught out' and being straight forward!). And I have been a subscriber for about 5 years until just now. I thought you knew that but perhaps you didn't

but not been tempted to support it financially.
You ask why I don't contribute financially (see above - I have until now). Quite simple - as I just said, I do not have the need at the mo to purchase a 'commercial' product, because my driving is very limited (and the Navigon cameras are pretty accurate as well, while their storage capacity for 3rd party POIs is limited, so I can't load anywhere near the whole lot anyway). I would contribute again if (a) I need the camera database again (red lights in particular), or (b) feel 'charitably' that the site should be supported anyway, even if I don't actually need the cameras at the moment.
I would be quite upset if I was being considered as 'mealy mouthed' over this. My suggestions in this thread have been made in good faith and as a full supporter of the site (mostly as a subscriber). But PGPSW are asking for ideas about how they can re-invigorate the site commercially. And after all, 'commercially' is the whole key to this in the long term, not 'charitable' support, which won't last long. I would guess that Darren at al will consider useful suggestions from any member whether they pay for the cameras or not After all, I would guess that a lot of members of the site are not necessarily 'subscribers' but they still value it, and probably wouldn't appreciate implications that they are somehow 'unfaithful' because of that.
Why have I written all this - Sorry . Best wishes to all _________________ David

I have suggested scrubbing FLM's and introducing a 50% contribution for life instead, in two recent posts. Not one comment has so far been made on the idea, so I wish you better luck.

Yes, I've been there, but I couldn't see anywhere for my membership ID? Does it by any chance know who I am?
Just above the Options it will state:
Status: Registered - Active Subscription
You are currently subscribed to our site. Select one of the payment options below to extend your subscription.
To 'extend your subscription' implies that the system knows who you are. _________________ Richard

I posted this last Friday (amongst other things)

Regarding existing lifers, you either
1. rescind completely for everyone and resort to standard subscription
2. provide them with a lifetime reduced subscription
3. invite them to make a donation every year, possibly with a recommended amount

I'm sure your suggestions will have been noted. I suspect a vigorous debate is going on behind the scenes.

Me too (grammatically rubbish, I usually say "me three"). I hope it's getting towards Darren going with volte face.
Anita, burtonian, GeoffCee, bradders2 and anyone else - the reason I wrote FULL recurring subscription was precisely because of these suggestions - it seems to me that awarding lifetime reduced subscriptions is introducing death by a thousand cuts instead of the axeman, just takes longer to go down. If Darren goes for volte face, reduced subs would be another millstone, just for the sake of save face!
BigPerk, thank you for your information which reminded me of one inevitable reason for subscriptions being lost - natural wasteage, whether in your case from ceasing to need the cameras, or simply old soldiers like me reaching the end of the road! Oddly enough, I hadn't thought of this! And no, I had no idea you were once a subscriber - as I said, that information is only available to"team". My information is the same as yours - Lifers are made up of Moderators, Verifiers and those members whose tags state "Life Member" (except, of course, there are some Lifers [indicated in this thread] who either don't want it displayed or who have been missed by "the system" - well, missed by MaFt! ). _________________ Dennis
