Thanks for that reassurance, Darren.
(Perhaps Apple could have spent less time on the eye candy fly-over and more on getting the nitty gritty maps right! Or perhaps they used the old cartographer's trick of introducing deliberate errors so that they could identify piracy? ) _________________ Anton |

So......TOMTOM......Where is it then??!!
Any update on this?
Any danger it might actually be available before Xmas?
If they wait till after Xmas they will have properly missed the boat. Everyone will have spent up after buying their new tabs and competitors Nav software to run on them.
All i can say is it better be priced to fly off the shelves otherwise i won't be investing!!
ETA: I've just looked on the TOMTOM site to see what's happening and they have indeed now released an Android version. Prices look fine too so that's good however, i think it's early days yet before i take the plunge as it seems the app is a bit buggy and lacking some really useful features from previous versions going by the buyer/user feedback on the Android Market download page for this product.
I'll wait till the new year. Maybe they'll have it sorted by the spring.

As you now realise, it's out. I guess you must have missed this announcement in the PGPSW forum (TomTom Software section) back in early October
TomTom for Android lands in Google Play store _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

But it doesn't yet support Android devices with high-res screens so that's all of the current crop of must have phones and 7 & 10" tablets. _________________ Darren Griffin |

It also needs a data or wifi connection to check licence and start, so if you are in remote place on wifi only and no connection not much use. _________________ Moto G5s Plus, Sygic 17.4.8 |

Is that correct???
So the one time you really need on board maps (no data) you can't have them?? How stupid can you get. And what about when you are roaming? _________________ Peter

No that isn't correct. It does not need a data connection at all. Wherever did you get that idea? _________________ Darren Griffin |

When TmTom starts up the first thing it does is check for the licence this needs a data connection, perhaps you havent noticed this. _________________ Moto G5s Plus, Sygic 17.4.8 |

Ahh.... now I see. You didn't say "first thing" previously, so I assumed you meant every time you switched it on. If it does it once only when first installed that is not a problem really is it? Or am I still misunderstanding what you are saying? _________________ Peter

I'm seeking clarification on this as I've never seen that happen and my test devices don't have SIMs in currently. So whatever the actual situation, it's not a check that happens on every launch else I'd have witnessed it.
Indeed I've just tested this on my SGII with Airplane Mode enabled. TomTom launched without complaint. _________________ Darren Griffin |

because its on a freinds desire i cant double check, but it does say to verify something like "The google play licence is not valid, please contact Google if you think this is a mistake .Note A network connection is required to verify your Google Play Licence" . So i left it with him to check with Google
He assured me it was a geniune download. personally I am awaiting the release of the HD version to see comments, seeing this first release cant say i was terribly impressed. and hopefully i am wrong n the problem. _________________ Moto G5s Plus, Sygic 17.4.8 |

It's also fine on the SGS3 in flight mode - with wi-fi & mobile data off / GPS on TomTom starts & routes without problem & takes no longer to start than it does normally _________________ Galaxy Note 4 / TomTom GO : CamerAlert : CoPilot |

Methinks your friend's app may not be as he describes.
That or he has a problem with Google Play. _________________ Peter

I've asked and been told that it requires a licence validation every 100 launches. I'm waiting confirmation on the actual number but, if that is the case, there really isn't an issue.
A 100 launches would cater for even the most extreme cases where data was not available such as a holiday etc. It explains why I've yet to see the error on my Galaxy SII.
And the licence check can be performed over any data connection, WiFi, 3G etc. _________________ Darren Griffin |
