My 940 has developed a sticking on/off button.
Does anyone know if this is an easy/cheap fix? I'm willing to dismantle it myself if necessary.
Thanks. _________________ TT GO 1005 |

If you fancy taking the unit apart, do a forum search for battery changing as the disassembly steps will be the same.
It's possible the switch itself is OK, but its the plastic actuator that's sticking.
If not, the switch itself is a 20p part (if you can source a replacement), but it is a surface-mount component on a multilayer printed circuit board.
Unless you are used to working on such things, then I'm afraid you won't have the equipment needed to do the micro-soldering required to swap the switch. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Since I first started this thread the button has finally failed.
Whenever pressed it remains down, right of centre more than anything, causing the device to be in a constant state of reboot.
I've removed the button leaving the 940 only operational via the small button on the circuit board itself which is not a long term solution for me.
Does anyone know of any repair options here or should I start my search for an alternative sat nav now? _________________ TT GO 1005 |

You could google "tomtom repairs" & get a few quotes as it's going to be cheaper than a new device for sure |

I did get one quote of £50! I'm not really looking to spend much on my 940 now given it's age. Sods law I pay for a repair and something else fails the following week. _________________ TT GO 1005 |

Can you not use eBay (or similar auction site) to obtain a cheap, possibly non functional, TT Go x40 (any 40 series would do) and pinch the plastic switch out of that?
Assuming it is just the button failed, not the switch. _________________ TomTom Go 540 - V9.058, Map GB & Ireland 860.3101

I sometimes get my button stocking but find that if I hold backward pressure so the button is pushed towards the rear of the device I am able to power it on/or off without it sticking. If the button is jamming on the housing has anyone tried a drop of light oil to lubricate it? |

A bit of a long shot but try a few drops of isopropyl alcohol on the button.
It cleared a sticking shutter release button on my camera _________________ Jonial

Finally opened up the 940......and found a small piece of the black plastic ON/OFF button still attached inside the case. The two small pieces either side of this button are located in the case and give the button its springiness. _________________ TT GO 1005 |
