TomTom celebrate 3yrs in the App Store

To celebrate TomTom for iPhone and iPad's third anniversary in the iTunes App Store, TomTom are running a promotion.

Between now and 24th September, TomTom's navigation app for UK and Ireland has been reduced from £49.99 to £39.99.

It's a pity they don't mark the anniversary by releasing the Android version & with an introductory offer in line with this, or maybe even cheaper Very Happy

Or maybe the announcement of the new iOS with built in Tom Tom maps along with navigation, and, apparently, free traffic, is scaring the willies out of them. Mind you I suspect it will still need downloading over the air and will not be stored on board, so maybe not.

You are correct that it has much to do with iOS6. But they're not scared though. They expect licensing revenues from Apple to be higher than decreasing revenue from apps. Cheap apps with no local map data will become obsolete. The more professional apps with onboard maps like tomtom or navigon will remain interesting, but they will become cheaper and they might sell less of them.

iOS6 also features TomTom HD traffic. Which is both interesting, exciting and/or scary. What will it do to the current business model and pricetag of HD traffic? What will Apple pay TomTom to use HD traffic all across iOS (200 million devices and rising fast with iPhone5) and also on upcoming desktop maps? Will Apple share user-data from iphone owners with TomTom to allow TomTom to derive traffic information from it? Increasing the HD quality in the US and introducing it in countries where HD traffic is not yet available (tomtom want to expand to China, Brazil, Russia and maybe Turkey).

TomTom management are being quite vague about these changes, risks and new opportunities, which are significant.

I suspect this will cause TT real problems. Most iphone users are used to gobbling up data and their plans normally allow for it, so I suspect off board maps will be no problem to them (as long as they stay in their urban jungles). The sale of TT apps will plummet I suspect and I am sure Apple will have driven a very hard bargain. I suspect TT need Apple more than Apple need TT.

The scareder you are the vaguer you are usually.

A more important question for me, given that I suspect that my wife's iPad2 (with GPS) will soon be offered the upgrade, is will the new iOS offer the equivalent of Google Satellite view and street view, or will she be stuck with the maps only?

The last time TomTom offered the UK and Ireland maps for £ 39.99 they reduced the In App purchase price for HD Traffic too.

Have they done that this time round too does anybody know ?
Nice to save £ 10.00 on the Map purchase price , but even better to save on Hd Traffic too !!!!
