Hi all,
New user to pda's and was wondering if someone could tell me if it is safe to use a magnetic pda mount on my ipaq 2210.
I have always kept magnets away from storage devices but have seen a lot of mag mounts for sale.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

Hi
Welcom to the forum.
i have always been cautious with magnets as well, but the concensus seems to be that its no problem as the screens are tft and the storage is solid state.

It should be safe.
It is not safe if you are using a microdrive though or in proximity to any devce that has a hard drive as the magnet will ruin it. _________________ Ian.

Actually that's not actually true.
Whilst it is a good idea to keep disk media away from magnetic sources it does take a certain amount of effort to scramble media with an ordinary magnet.
Years ago I was a field support engineer for HP on the big daddy's of disk drives (for those days). When I had to change a bottom platter in the field I had to use an electro magnet to wipe the surface clean so that a servo surface could be written down. And this electro magnet was pretty big and heavy - and had to be held just mm away from the disk surface for several seconds to do its thing.
Whilst having a regular magnet right up against disk media is likely to cause problems, it doesn't necessarily follow that it will. It all depends on the strength of the magnetic field and so on.

It may be worth reading this thread for info on one users experience with a magnet.
Microdrives for instance are much smaller than hard drives of yesteryear and hence a smaller magnet 'could' cause you a headache. _________________ Ian.

Thanks for the advice folks, have bought myself a mag mount.
The magnet is small,so it should not cause any probs!
Now just got to wait for the new cradle from Origin so i can connect the two together.

Is it safe to attach the magnet to the back of an Axim 3 itself? |

Quite rare nowadays to find any magnetic area in a vehicle since all the metal structure is well isolated, partly to reduce injury, partly to cut down on noise/vibration and also for looks. |
