BACKUP your CFG files!!!

Make sure you backup your CFG files in your \CoPilot directory. These hold all your settings and also your activation keys, so if you do lose your PPC memory from your battery dying, then once you have re-installed you may not be able to re-activate. If you then copy your CFG files back into place, your PPC will be re-activated.

How do you do that, Dave? I found a load of .cfg files in the CoPilot folder and have copied them and pasted them on the CF card which olds my CP maps. But I'm not sure how to use the iPAQ 2210 backup to back up only those files

All I did was to dock the PPC and use the ActiveSync EXPLORE option to copy them over to the hard drive. That's the easiest way, or you could use File Explorer/Resco Explorer on the PPC to back them up without having to connect to a PC.

If you want to backup your main memory then you can use Sprite Backup and this will backup the \CoPilot directory.

I have used the backup tool that has been included with Windows Mobile 2003.

Selecting the options to include system data etc has worked fine. Restores the complete build quickly after a soft reset.

If you use the new version of Sprite Backup and do a complete backup to SD or CF. Then when your device fails due to lack of power or hard reset, how can you restore without installing the new version first (which is difficult when in a car).

I haven't tried the latest version of Sprite, but previous versions allows you to create the backup as a self extracting archive (.exe), so all you do is hard reset the PPC, use File Explorer to browse your storage card, and then tap the EXE file that is your backup and it will contain a mini version of Sprite and start to restore your backed up data for you that's in the EXE file.

In the older versions I did have an odd glitch on a very full Pocket PC where for some reason when trying to perform a restore using the EXE file it failed, but trying the standard format (ZIP ?!) it seemed to work. SpriteSoft wasn't too sure what the problem was, and never had it since.

I still use the EXE backup routine and I'll be doing another lot of backups before the weekend too :D

Dave, I backed up my *.cfg files earlier this year. While perusing the forum I stumbled across this same topic once again and saw that some of my config files had changed on my PPC. Should I be backing these up to my hard drive on a regular basis or will the originals serve as protection -just in case....?

I just tried backing up the whole device (a T-Mobile MDAIII) using the xbackup utility that's in its ROM. I then hard reset the device, and restored from the backup (that I had stuck on the SD card). Afer the restoral the device was as-was an there was NO request to reactivate or register CP5. Given that this strategy backs up everything else in the PPC, it's a 'cure all' I think I'll be using even though the backups take a while...

I usually practice 'safe backup' and backup the config files as well as using Sprite Backup to backup the device to Storage Card.

We do from time to time add new features to the config files, but at least you have a backup to go back to say for instance if you wrongly installed a US patch rather than a UK patch that will adversely effect how CoPilot runs in terms of Routing Algorithms and Terminology like Circles instead of Roundabouts and Ramps instead of Slip Roads.

This way you can easily see the difference by comparing an old CFG file and the new one and easily right the wrong.
