Mobile World Congress, Barcelona. CoPilot have made a bold move in the competitive navigation app markets with the offer of a free app.
The free app, CoPilot GPS will offer much of the features and functionality previously available in CoPilot Live. It will be available in the Spring in both Android Market and iTunes App Store.
Positioned as an alternative to Google Maps, the app will have on-board mapping (so no data charges) and a full complement of points of interest. Users can input addresses and calculate and view routes as normal.
What it doesn't provide is voice guidance, a 3D map and turn-by-turn navigation. You can still use it to guide you but it will not recalculate if you wander off the planned route.
In-app purchase options will allow you to unlock the full functionality and give access to 3D maps, voice etc at a cost of £19.99. ActiveTraffic will be £9.99/year.
It's an interesting move by ALK. Google's dominance of the Android navigation market has been blamed by some navigation app providers but others, such as ALK and Sygic are doing well and this may give ALK a huge boost.

Well it is the strongest contender in the Android market - it is obvious they have vast experience of smartphone navigation and a long history in GPS
While not perfect by any means, Co-Pilot simply doesn't make the same mistakes that ALL the others currently do
It is the only contender that occasionally I choose to use over one of my PNDs _________________ TomTom Go Live 6100, 600

Interesting; might they be a bit worried about NavFree, do you think? _________________ Roger, G1LIW
