Apologies if this has been covered before; I can't find it.
I would like to use my Garmin 1490T on my bicycle. Finding a box which charges from my bike dynamo to give 5.2V output to a USB socket is easy, but if I plug a USB to mini USB cable into the 1490 it will go into PC mode.
How can I charge my 1490 using a USB rather than the official ciggy lighter arrangement and still use it?
Thanks in advance. _________________ Garmin 1490T |

Ah, now I've seen this somewhere....
You need to have a "personality resistor" between pins 4+5 of the USB (although some people say a "short" between those pins is sufficient.
There's some more info and a link or two in this topic:
Garmin car chargers output voltage and current
See post #3 onwards and there's a (not very easy) workround in the last post too. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

When I first got my Garmin 2200 I connected it to the car power via one of those ciggy lighter USB socket converters and a short cable I had that fitted both ends.
I ran it this way for a short time but I can't remember whether I needed to tap the screen or whether the GPS detected motion turned on Navigation mode. _________________ DashCam:

There are a couple of sellers on eBay (search by userid for pomegadget and kingofgadget-uk) who have cheap car chargers that have the requisite resistor fitted to the mini-usb plug. You could snip the lead and attach it to whatever you've got so far - possibly by adding a USB type-A plug.
The chargers from 'pomegadgets' (also known as Duragadget) are possibly slightly better quality (and they sell the same unit at several different prices). The 'kingofgadgets-uk' charger I bought had a curly wire, which may or may not be better for your application.
[Alternatively, you could maybe rescue the innards of the charger, add a full-wave rectifier and a smoothing capacitor and connect it directly to the 'dynamo']
There may well be a way of fooling the 1490 into not going into charging mode - most units seem to have a way, though they're all different.
One method which almost always works, is that mentioned by ASH10 in the other thread - ie connecting the power while in diagnostic mode. The drawback is that usually initiates some kind of GPS reset and makes it do a cold-start, which can sometimes take a while.

The OP does however suggest that he has/is gettin such a device. |

That's what the innards of the charger is...
What I was suggesting, was to pop the PCB out of the cigarette lighter plug housing and use it as the basis of a voltage controller. IIRC bike dynamos generate AC, hence the need for a bit of additional circuitry. I'm not sure if the input voltage would still be in range though - unless you pedal fast |

Sorry Phil I am a b****r for opening mouth before engaging brain and reading properly. And I fully agree with your latest comments. I wonder what the output of the dynamo is, I suppose the bulb rated voltage would give one a clue . |

I can't make the 1490 do any of the "hacks" in the link but thanks for posting it. I'm going with the short to pins 4 & 5 and have bought some right-angle USB plugs from Ebay.
Thanks again for all the input. _________________ Garmin 1490T |
