And thats one of the key reasons why I’m considering a Satmap; its so we can spend more time enjoying the walk and less time consulting the map.
That's exactly why I use the Satmap, so this is a realistic expectation. My map is usually a backup.
As people have said you can use other people's GPX files, and follow them. For me the great thing about the Satmap is the detailed mapping (I usually use 1:50,000) and the abiity to plan routes on the unit itself. I have used the old routeplanner (internet based) and plan on using the new one, but generally find it easier to plan a route on paper (for the bigger view) then punch it into the Satmap (takes a couple of minutes) and follow that during the walk.

Not sure what you have finally decided to do MidnightRambler but I thought I would add a postscript based on a walk I went on today. The lady who led it encountered a locked gate and a stalwart landowner who declined to open it. This meant she had to re-plan the walk on the fly. It then turned out that some nearby footpaths were not in good order. She was quite lost (literally) but with the A10 hanging on my shoulder I could advise her exactly where she was and where the nearest legal path was. After a few false starts we got back on track and all was well. However without the A10 to show her where she really was on a map that showed the legal footpaths (I think this only applies to OS maps) we would have had a far more difficult time.
I thought that this was a pretty good example of why I think the A10 is so good. I acknowledge that ViewRanger on a smartphone or similar has similar attributes but I don't find this as rugged or quite as well designed for use in the field. _________________ LostMike

But I do agree with sussamb, you should consider if you really need full OS mapping on a GPS (which does have some disadvantages in addition to the high cost). A "basic" GPS (e.g. the Garmin Venture also from Amazon) is more portable, much less than half the price, will allow you to follow pre-planned routes, record your track, have longer battery life and (IMHO) clearer screen in sunlight, etc..

And the base 'bundle', Active 10, is currently being discounted by Satmap themselves to £250 - even better ! Good as Amazon is IMO, I always try and check the currency of any products I am considering buying, as well as carefully checking the specs - you don't always get the exact bundle you are assuming you will get. Two other bundles are also reduced by £50. Satmap's website gives a comparison between the different 'bundles' (there is only one actual GPS unit) @ www.satmap.co.uk/about.php , so you can see what you get compared with what you want. _________________ David

I don't agree, the OS 25k maps in "electronic" form are very expensive (not just from Satmap). Generally they are more expensive than the paper Explorers and in laminated form are probably more waterproof than a Satmap.

No shortage of advice on Satmap price here, but if you're still waivering take a look in the latest (April) issue of TGO this month. Chris Townsend has an in depth test of GPS devices (guess which comes out top) with plenty of practical observations like price, battery life etc. I think I saw something on navigation too. It may not have hit the shelves quite yet.
