I've 'borrowed' this from the car forum I frequent. I've noticed a few recent posts here about TT update failures and this is a copy of how TT directed a fix:
The unit in question here was a TT 1000
Quote: | The steps below will show you how to reinstall MyTomTom in order to receive all your updates.
STEP 1 Exit My TomTom program
• Click on the TomTom logo on the task bar (Windows) or the menu bar (Mac)
• Hold the SHIFT key on your keyboard and click on Close and then Exit
STEP 2 - Show hidden files or folders (Windows only)
The steps here depend on your Operating System. If you are using an Apple computer please skip to STEP 3.
Windows XP:
Click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options. On the View tab, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders.
Windows 7/Vista:
Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options. Click the View tab. Under Advanced settings, click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.
STEP 3 - Remove the MyTomTom folder
Delete the folder called MyTomTom 3 in the location below:
Windows 7: C:\Users\'user name'\AppData\Local Settings\TomTom
If you cannot find the above file to delete, you can find it this way:
- Click on your Start button in Windows, then in the search bar type in: %localappdata%\TomTom and press enter. Then delete the Home3 folder from the window that pops up.
*Please note: 'USERNAME' will need to be changed to your login name.
STEP 4 - Open MyTomTom
• Open the MyTomTom Support Application (through your Start menu (Windows) or Applications (mac)
• Connect your device to the computer while it is switched off
• Press and hold the power button until your device switches on
• Open the following website in your browser: http://www.tomtom.com
• Click on the green MyTomTom button in the top right corner of tomtom.com and log in
• Click on the MyTomTom button again and click on Check for New Items
Your updates will be listed here to install. |

Am I of the understanding that TT first give you a new 'Home' which then forces a non-working update on to your device which you have to jump through the hoops above to sort out? Or is the above only half the story? |

I suspect another half of the story may be that the Mac instructions are either incomplete, or inaccurate, or both. No matter, you won't catch me going near Home for a little while - until they sort out the latest fiasco. I'll just have to do without the new map until then. _________________ Dennis

I have a GO 730 and I have now new maps running on an old firmware. I did it by accidentally, I must admit.
Here is the “installation guide”:
1. Copy all files from internal memory into the memory card (do it when running on 8.351)
2. Start the navigator from the memory card
3. Update (forced) firmware to 9.4
4. Update maps
5. Remove the memory card and start the navigator from internal memory
Voilá, now you have the latest maps running on 8.351 firmware.
Hopefully this really works on the road. Not tested yet. This is definitely unsupported by TomTom. |

Thanks ArtoP.
Well, I have to admit to my embarassment I don't have a Micro SD card for my GO550!! So I stole one from an old Garmin Mobile for smartphone which I never did like and used that.
Copied from Internal to MicroSD card, then shoved just the card into card reader and updated that to 9.400 and map 885. When I put the card into the GO, it booted from the card, including demanding permission to share. I don't fancy that, so I then deleted everything from the card except the new map, stuck it into the 550 and switched map.
Now I have 550 Live (it looks as thought the Live services work) on App 9.061, with UK_ROI map 885.
I wonder how many inexperienced TT users are flopping round like headless chickens? _________________ Dennis

I was using the Home hack so as to prevent the automatic app update, but I wasn't getting offered the new map, so I undid the hack.
As I like to keep the previous version of the map on the device so I can easily revert to it if I encounter problems with the new one I, like Dennis, updated the app and map via card reader, and then deleted everything but the map before putting the card in the 720. So on the device I still have app v8.351 and map v880, and on the card just map v885, and I can easily switch between the two. _________________ Anita

All useful stuff, but nothing to do with the first post, which was about MyTomTom, not Home! _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |
