pocketgpsworld.com
TomTom have announced a partnership with the AA to provide real-time traffic data to their Traffic News website.

The real-time data is from TomTom's HD Traffic service. Information is compiled from many sources including TomTom LIVE connected nav units, mobile phones, road sensors and other real-time data.

Updates will be provided every 60 seconds to the AA's website.

I was waiting for that sort of reply Smile

I was browsing the Garmin forum yesterday and it seems they also have massive problems with delivering traffic to their units.

Interesting. Not sure how good their data is. Tonight on the map England was covered (at high scale) with roadwork icons and the like. Scotland - not one!

The M8 at Glasgow airport is down to 1 lane.

In the past I have found TomTom HD traffic to be fairly good but it might be nice to include that area above Carlisle and the 5m population.

For tomorrow though Rolling Eyes I might stick with Trafficmaster and the car's alerts.

I'm not really up to speed on the various methods of delivering data to SatNav's but my built in Honda/Alpine unit has RDS TMC and it has never failed to deliver traffic. Within 2 minutes of starting the car up will pop the TMC symbol on the SatNav display and it's all systems go.

It also delivers traffic for the whole of the UK. I can see traffic problems in Scotland from London if I scan the "Traffic Event List" and scroll to the bottom of the list, (ordered by distance).

This delivery via various traffic providers alongside the FM signal does work OK so I can only assume it's a reception thing for those with RDS TMC ?

RDS-TMC has always been variable on satnav's. I don't know if the FM carrier is low power or what the reason is but it works fine in my car's factory fit system but the RDS receivers I've had from various manufacturers have all been poor.

There are two TMC providers who use different sources. TomTom's HD Traffic service is not TMC and also uses different data sources to TMC.

And I've had occasions where TMC has reported no issue whereas I'm sat in traffic that HD Traffic reported, and vice versa.

Updated every sixty seconds eh? I'm looking at the AA traffic map at 11:35 and it's telling me it was last updated at 11:27. No sign of the M1 and M25 roadworks either Sad

Hmm. Mine needed a button to be clicked to show roadworks, but that didn't show any of the roadworks on M4 - there are at least three sets from Bristol into London, all with Specs average 50 cameras. It says updated at 12:12pm, time now is 12:21pm.

Updated provided every 60secs to the AA. That's not the same thing as the AA's site updating every 60secs Wink

Why, that's what I said in the story!

Whether the AA, or their site, chooses to act on the data and publish it at 60sec intervals is a different matter.
