After my TomTom 920 gave up last summer I've was holding out for one of the high-end 2012 Garmins. However after reconsidering if spending a fortune on another device was such a great idea (TT lasted < 2 years) I decided to shop around.

Today I spotted the nuvi 30 in ASDA for only £49 and thought it was worth a punt. Will report back after I've given it a run for it's money...

Well, so far so good, used it to go from Northants to Birmingham city centre, got us to our hotel no problem. Very fast to get a GPS fix, lane guidance was very good, estimated times were spot on.

I did have a minor issue when I turned the engine off, when turned back on nuvi had forgotten the route. Also, it kept putting up the stupid T&C's every time I turned it on, although I believe when we used it this morning it didn't do it.

I do miss being able to set the POI alerts myself (I used to have 'warning speed camera 40' etc set up on my TT920). Also, I'm not too keen on the Garmin daytime colour scheme, not sure if you can download new ones or not yet. Options seem somewhat limited compared to the TT, but haven't missed anything else yet.

This purchase was purely made as I didn't want to waste another £200+ on a device that only lasts 1.5 years, plus the fact that the sd slot on the new TT's still aren't enabled. Seems like £49 was a good buy.
