Does that apply to the database I just downloaded for CamerAlert ?

Reason I ask is that I'm driving across France on Tuesday and want to know if I can use the smartphone or not. No idea how to check the database myself before I get off the ferry...

Just done an update on TT HOME and they have included a 'Removal' file instead of 'Update' for France - hopefully I am not duplicating info?

On our European datebase 10.011 I see that we have 65kph pMOBILE and Gatso sets - that's not a speed limit I have come across before? Can you advise please MaFt

Edited to correct vers. number and include Gatso.

Cyprus has some at 65kph

CamerAlert has NOT been updated to take the new law into account. We are still waiting for Apple to approve the current update too... :/

Remember that downloading the new version of the database without the French cameras is not enough to comply with the new French law.

You will also need to physically remove the old French data, otherwise it will stay on your Sat-Nav for ever!

I think there needs to be a big announcement to all subscribers to remind them of that.

Doesn't look like this will be done in time for my trip tomorrow.

If I uninstall CamerAlert to meet the requirements of the French law, will I be able to reinstall it free of charge or do I have to pay again ?

I know it's not very much cash, but if I have to do it every time I travel to France...

Cheers Rog

re-downloading apps from the appstore that you have already paid for is free of charge.

if you are a subscriber then you will be able to update once you have redownloaded it.

So going by what I've read on here, they dont want you to know where the actual cameras are but they are telling you they are in certain areas Confused So do they want you to know or not?

It seems like most drivers will now be driving trying to look for cameras which would be more dangerous. And how will they know if your using something like the PGPSW database on a sat nav or phone?

Probably by stopping you and having a look on the device Rolling Eyes

Is there a high chance of being stopped by their police then? And wouldnt that run into 100's or 1,000's of people being stopped on the off chance they may have some warning device?

It's normally very easy to identify a car using a sat nav. Theycan usually be seen from outside the vehicle if they are in a map readable position. So the police will have a real chance on spotting that. Whether they begin doing spot checks and searching vehicles, locating hidden stanavs and mobiles, checking for warning apps, that's another question.
I'm sure having a debate at the side of an autoroute with a gendarme about the difference between camera warnings and "dangerous" zone warnings would be an interesting situation. I'm certain you'd still end up being escorted to a cash point to draw cash for the fine!

I regularly run a route in France, so will simply put 'waypoints' on my route as I approach cameras, let them sort that one out Wink

Probably will do. Like their spot-checks for making sure you have a hi-vis jacket for every passenger easily accessible, and replacement bulbs and a red warning triangle and a breathalyser kit (coming soon)...

Dead easy to spot a foreign car and these are more likely to be 'breaking the law' than the locals (who will already be aware of the silly requirements for driving in France) so pull those over for a higher chance of catching a perpetrator.

It will be the breathalyser that will catch most people out as it's probably the easiest thing for the police to look for. After all, they would need to know how to operate every GPS system and smartphone in every language (can you get Welsh on a tomtom ?) to find the right menu/setting for speed camera warnings.
It will get even more confusing when companies like Tomtom introduce their legal 'danger zones'.

I remember a few years back on a ferry to Calais, there was a tannoy annoucemnet that advised drivers that the french police were setting up roadblocks around Calais to spot check drivers to make sure that they had the correct equipment. They then mentioned that you can buy a european drivers kit from their store at £70 each and I was amazed at the number of people that quickly went to buy one.
Needless to say there was no sign of any police in Calais but P&O made a few quid Very Happy

Digressed a bit there but it still makes me smile.

I will be travelling in France in a month or so's time with my faithfull TomTom Go720. I have found a little utility for the TomTom which adds a button to the first level menu to delete any POI files that you specify (incl bmp and ogg). It has been designed specifically to help if you get stopped in France. A couple of screen taps and the files are gone.

Have given it a try and it seems to work OK. There is an option to change the button to Restore after a reboot.

This looks like a good solution.

It would be even better if the Speed camera POIs for France were available separately so only the offending ones couple be removed (either manually or by this method).

No chance you'll be giving away where you might get this utility or the name of it? Wink

Unfortunately, most likely way this would be enforced, is when approaching a Gatso site the Gendarmes will pull you over, (concealed entrance?) and if the sat nav/smart phone is busy flashing away a speed warning, with a camera location, one will be relieved of the unit and given the "on the spot fine". If you've managed to switch it off, which would probably be unlikely, failing to switch it on would result in the much the same. (or "forgetting" the PIN ! )

Given the fine for having the database is a lot more that that for actually speeding, I would regretfully settle for not using the PGPS French data as it currently is.

Make no mistake this is going to be a big in France this year, more income, with less hassle for them!!
