Can you belive it ?

In the early hours of xmas morning my mother died [93 years old and suffered from alziemers been in care home 6 years, and had been going down hill the last week so it was not unexpected],now can you believe that I still have not got a death cert and the reason why ?,her GP is off sick !! at the moment still do not know when I will get it,this added to having 2 holiday period backlogs with the register of B,M & deaths [you can only see them by appointment],It is fortunate that my brother and I are not emotional types or this could be very upsetting.You would have thought there was a "plan" in place to cover this ,Once iI do get the cert I think a letter to the GP surgery will not be out of place about their lack of compassion.

I would have thought they would have other GP's who can sign things off? Or is there only a single GP in her practise?

When my Father passed away I had trouble getting a death certificate because, although he had been ill for several years and had a terminal prognosis, he had not been seen by his GP in the two weeks (I think that is the correct period) before he died. The GP came out when he died but was unable to sign the death certificate. My fathers body had to be taken by the undertaker to a hospital 15 miles away where he had received treatment during the previous two weeks and a doctor there signed the certificate.

All of this seemed to be necessary to avoid a postmortem examination.

Not all GP's are the same.

I'm currently waiting for my mother-in-law to "pass on", she's a fighter.

Speaking to our GP he said "I've got the pack ready", which I though was very efficient but fortunatley my wife didn't understand what he meant and forgot about it.

From my experience, when my parents passed on, your most annoying time is dealing with the banks/insurance companies. I wish you luck.

I'm sure most of you will already know this, but for anyone who doesn't, take several photocopies of the death certificate before letting it go - so many other places will want to see it before proceeding with winding up the estate.

Or get several copies from the register office, as loads of places don't accept photocopies

£3.50 each. Suggest one for each Bank, building society, post office, or insurance company. Or get a solicitor as they seem to accept photocopies from solicitors - not you or me though.
