|

My old TT 730 hasn't had any map updates for years so maybe it is time for a replacement.
The 730 has worked well for my monthly EU travels and I quite like the ease of use. The mapping also seems okay as it even has my village in its database, unlike many other devices.
TomTom's downgrading and apparent arrogance has made me look at other brands now as well but I have no experience with the likes of Garmin or others.
With most brands' marketing departments creating smoke and mirrors, it is difficult to see how units compare.
So what would be a suitable replacement that can have the UK and all of Europe as well as Australia maps loaded without the need to swap? With decent routing, comprehensive EU postcode searching, easy adjustable POI and favourites? |

If you're happy with the 730 why not get a new map instead of replacing it? _________________ Anita

I heartily agree with both of the above... The Go730 was a great model.
Add a 4GB or 8GB SDHC card to it and you can put all the new maps you could ever want on there. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think the maps from TT were great value for money if I was to update.
But it seems that your opinions are that a new satnav from TT or an other brand won't be as good as an updated 730? |

It works well.
You know how to work it.
Keep it, update it, get an SDHC card and go with the map update thing. If it doesn't break "tomorrow", you'll be far happier than struggling with the newer devices. _________________ Dennis

Oh come on, say it as it really is, even 18 months after first release the newer devices dependent upon "MyTomTom" for a PC interface are CRAP:
No true Itinerary Planning capability
No method to back up the device
No way to use a memory card
Reflective screens
Just a few of the reasons I decided enough was enough, upgrade the 730 with a memory card and map and keep it going until someone wakes up and realises the current stuff isn't what users want (my view entirely) - Mike |

The trouble is, Mike, I've never had one of the newer devices to actually give it a hands on going over, so I can't be too damning. However, I'm very happy to say that I have never bought one of them BECAUSE of comments on this website, which, due to the respect in which I hold those who have commented (e.g. yourself), I have entirely believed to portray an accurate description of their crappiness! I'd love a new TomTom of the standard which I had when I got my GO700 and which is almost achieved by my GO520T and almost achieved by my GO550 Live. But the only way I'll ever have one of the current range is if somebody gives me one for free - I'll not be handing over my cash for one. Also bearing in mind the fact that my LIve Services HD Traffic has been crap (I'm my own witness there) for over a year now, I wouldn't be looking at a Live model either. _________________ Dennis

Thanks for the insight. I'll stop looking at a Navigon that looked quite good and update my 730 and order a new battery, even though somehow, for no real reason, it grates to give TomTom money. |
