|
|
Navfree, the free GPS nav app for iPhone is now available on the Android platform.
Navfree has coverage of Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand, India, South Africa and Latin America and uses OpenStreetMap data. Navfree stores the map data on-board which means you can use it whilst roaming without fear of nasty data fees.
But, great as OpenStreetMap is, and we've been huge fans of the project for many years, the navigable data is still far from perfect and, if you're going to use it for navigation you need to bear this in mind. There are still many gaps in the data and even more gaps in the navigable data.
But the beauty of OpenStreetMap is its growing all the time, with many thousands of updates from the vast community of map contributors, the map data is improving day by day.
Android users can download Navfree on the Android Market here.

So what's the catch? You're not going to get an app like that for nothing.

No ad's. The map data is free. They will likely try to get you top upgrade to NavMii which uses TeleAtlas mapping and may have extra features.
And, as Darren says, the OSM data can be shoddy in many areas...

Android functionality is still a bit basic compared to iPhone, the maps only cover the UK and speed cameras have not been implemented |

Tried this on Asus Transformer and was rather impressed for a free app. Asked them about speed cameras and they have suggested it will be soon, happy to pay the £1.99 or similar if like the Apple store version, for that as contribution. The Ipad version is only £5 - cathc being the IPAD doesn't have GPS unless you have 3G version ( caught me out on that one :-( )
Guess I still have an old TomTom device as backup incase of dire map coverage. Just to find a way to stop teh mount moving around in the car so much - wide screen navigation :-)
Does Camera Alert work along side this for Android?, maybe I can get best of both worlds!! |

ok then but have you given WAZE a try?? its FREE also has TRAFFIC FREE and SPEED CAMERAS FREE???
I use it every day and its good for traffic as it will detect that you have slowed and it will auto send this info to every one around you.
it has some speed cameras but that is not what i use it for.
best thing is its easy if you find a camera or a road that's not on the map just add it and it will put it on your maps
Hay its FREE may be worth a look here's the link http://world.waze.com/ |

daughter has moved to a new home on a development..... Ndrive (Navteq) and Google maps ....OS have not got the road.... Open Street Maps has.....navigated their via Locus navigation using their vector maps....still prefer my Ndrive with traffic....but OSM/Locus certainly did the job...
I have used Locus for sometime on holiday...now with Vector maps life is much better....... don't dis OSM straight away....they could get you out of trouble like me.... |
