Will this impact the camera alert program? Or is it our personal devices that are classed as the accessing device?

I can't see it affecting CamerAlert as it would be your device accessing the map, not a web page, but could it affect such things as the Camera Submission Map and the POI Submission Map?

I can't imagine those submission maps getting more than 25,000 "hits" a day.

MaFt and Oldboy (who have to check the submissions) would explode!

To be honest I'm surprised they haven't done it before.
Whilst Google was a fledgling company I suppose it made sense. Now it is an established mega being it's a little bit of payback time.

The article mentions US$4 per 1000 hits over the 25,000. If you are a big user then I suppose you should pay a little, after all thee must have been a cost to Google in the 1st place.

No idea if this does/will/ can affect PGPSW.

Google own the API, but not the map dat itself.
I wonder if this will mean TeleAtlas, Naveq et al will be putting up their prices to Google now?

If I had £1 for every time someone brought this up this last week then I'd have... erm... £4 Very Happy

CamerAlert does NOT use Google Maps. It uses the Android SDK Maps API and the Apple iOS MapKit API.

The site submission maps and admin areas DO use the Maps API and so 'would' be chargeable under the new scheme. However, we are nowhere near 25,000 ma loads per day. The admin probably accounts for 1,000 map loads per day at most. A camera submission uses 3 map loads (1 for the main map then 2 for the static tiles that are loaded for the 'submit camera in same location' and 'submit in new location' options after loading) - a busy day would give about 100 submissions so that uses about 300. POI submissions use 1 per submission but I'm not sure on daily numbers - probably about 50-100 at a guess.

So that's a total whopping 1,500 at most! Well within the limits.

As for TomTom (AFKATA [Artist Formerly Known As TeleAtlas]) upping the prices, well, I'm pretty sure that they would be charging google a fair amount already - it's just that google decide not to pass the cost onto the customer / end-user. Garmin, Navigon et al could do that too, although I think Google probably have more funding...
