One for the experts.
Any ideas as to whether the new improved specs will have any bearing on GPS?
Cheers

The GPS spec of the 4S appears to be the same as the 4. Yes, the quoted standby hours for the 4S are "up to 200 hours" as opposed to the "up to 300 hours" of the 4, but I'm not sure that is relevant to GPS use. Other quoted usage hours for the 4S are mostly the same as the 4.

I thought they said the battery in the iPhone4S was better than the 4 yet it has 30% less standby time. Sucky. ![Confused](modules/Forums/images/smiles/icon_confused.gif) _________________ Gone fishing! |

I believe they were a bit wooly in describing the battery. After saying how they got all this awesome new stuff (A5 CPU, 1GB RAM, 2x faster GPU, auto-switching antennae etc) they said something along the lines of "with all this great new stuff you'd think that would destroy the battery, but we've worked really hard and got some great results - here they are:...."
From memory they never compared it to the iPhone 4 battery.

From those spec pages linked to above:
iPhone 4S
Talk time: Up to 8 hours on 3G, up to 14 hours on 2G (GSM)
Standby time: Up to 200 hours
Internet use: Up to 6 hours on 3G, up to 9 hours on Wi-Fi
Video playback: Up to 10 hours
Audio playback: Up to 40 hours
Iphone 4
Talk time: Up to 7 hours on 3G, up to 14 hours on 2G (GSM)
Standby time: Up to 300 hours
Internet use: Up to 6 hours on 3G, up to 10 hours on Wi-Fi
Video playback: Up to 10 hours
Audio playback: Up to 40 hours
So in use 4S is mostly the same or better. I think they made the point that 3G talk time was better. |

Alix, shall we leave the 'mine's better than yours' stuff for the myriad of other web sites that spend their time bashing each other products? Let's just accept that there some will choose iOS, others will choose Android and a few misguided individuals will make a huge mistake and plump for Windows Phone (cue sounds of tumbleweed blowing down the street)*.
Until we get a 4S tear down we won't know detailed specs but, looking at what has been posted so far, I can't see there will be any major change that affects GPS and why woud there, the iPhone 4 GPS is already pretty good. And as for battery, none of us would recommend you use an iPhone (or any smartphone) in-car with GPS without external power.

And for balance here, I have a Galaxy S2 as my Android handset. Lovely screen, the perfect size for me, but by 'eck, the GPS is utter, utter pants.
I'd have more luck calculating my position using a stop watch, tape measure and a compass than waiting for it's GPS to get a fix. Not surprised we get so many CamerAlert complaints from S2 owners.
I stood in a field last week to test it, and it took nearly 5 minutes to get a fix and then proceeded to lose it and regain it almost a dozen times in the next 5mins. And if you dare to move, it's game over. Shocking for a premium handset. _________________ Darren Griffin |

The just isn't inovative at all yes maybe its a bit quicker and the voice recognition maybe better than android and windows phone put together but so fair you have a phone then I done see the point in getting excited and hyped up over it. The new features are available on other platforms so far I don't see anything new that other platform already have _________________ currently using aponia truck navigation on windows phone. I don't know how Apple rate in the hype/review stakes, but I often seem to find manufacturer's reviews with what is an obvious copy of another model's review, supposedly amended to suit, but didn't get it right. Maybe that's what's happened to the battery details? _________________ Dennis
