Not a bad effort lads, as already mentioned the volumes need to be equalised, I'm 50% deaf and had turn up the volume to listen to you Darren, but then MaFt was too loud and i had to constantly adjust the volume so as not to disturb the rest of the family.
Content was a bit lacking but as this was just a trial run it was understandable.
Apart from that you get the thumbs up from me _________________ John. |

MaFt was using an IPhone and called in via Skype, I was using a USB desk Mic.
But I had the gain dialled down on mine (a Blue Yeti) as I was having an issue with it picking up extraneous noises etc.
Clearly dialled down too far. I did boost my volume in post but not enough.
Next time I'll keep a closer eye on the levels. I've got a different Mic now that is better suited to my particular desk environment. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Crikey! Complicated stuff!
Then I think you did very well to get it as good as you did
You were using a desk mic. but MaFt will have had the iPhone right next to his gob, and the inverse square law comes into effect here...
For every doubling of distance the mic is from the source, you only get a 1/4 of the audio power.
So (sorry if this is all fairly obvious!) getting yourself closer will increase both the overall level and improve the ratio of wanted to unwanted sound (extraneous noise AND echo/reverb). It all helps! _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

All advice is gratefully received, this is an entirely new field for me. To be able to record a Skype call and capture my audio requires some clever software and that, in the main, seem to work well.
We've gone for that as it gives us the maximum flexibility for having group discussions, interviews etc, all a participant needs is Skype.
On the audio front, I've now got a new mic that is an 'end address' type. Only came this morning and already it seems much better at capturing my voice and nothing else, just have to practice keeping close to it.
Where I struggle is in working out where, on the level meters, I should be aiming for, that and the whole 'not speaking at racing speed'
Also, I sound much less nasally on this mic so that's a bonus. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I thought it was really good. It streamed flawlessly, and QuickTime just displayed the audio time bar.
I had no problem catching what you were both saying (but then ever since I was a child I've been accused of speaking too fast too), and noticed neither a marked difference in volumes nor echoes. Maybe that's a benefit of having cheap speakers on my pc!
As far as future podcasts are concerned, I'd be more likely to listen if, rather than an hour, you did half an hour twice as frequently, but maybe my attention span is diminishing with age! _________________ Anita

A black art!
With digits you want to go for absolute maximum level, but without EVER "going over". Almost impossible to achieve in a "live" situation.
In practice, that means leaving yourself a reasonable amount of headroom to allow for any unexpected transients but while still keeping the overall level as high as possible.
There are agreed standards for how various analogue metering (VU meters, PPMs etc.) should be referenced in the digital world, but when all you have are the "waggle meters" on a piece of PC/Mac software you come back to the vague "hot enough but not too hot".
If you have any decibel scale on the meters, then I'd say a good starting point would be to let your normal speech sit at around minus 10 to minus 6 dB from "full scale". _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Cheers Andy. I have Soundtrack Pro and that has meters with the db scale so I'll follow your advice and experiment to find optimum settings, distance from mic etc! _________________ Darren Griffin |

My apologies to you all for criticising - I didn't realise it was all db and hzs and stuff - I just thought you sat in a kitchen and spoke at a microphone.
Feel free to get your own back with my very first ever posting on YouTube! The reason you can't spot the camera shake or the odd bit out of focus is that it was night time and there was a power cut. _________________ Dennis

What's NSFW? And at my age I don't even think about young ladies in short skirts (I merely thought "that's nice to accompany the band"). _________________ Dennis
