|
|
BBC News have reported that speed cameras across England are showing mixed results in terms of accidents and injuries.
New Department for Transport (DfT) figures show that although some speed camera partnerships report a reduction in accidents and injuries due to the introduction of cameras, casualties have actually increased at some speed camera sites since they were installed.
The figures are drawn from the 75 local authorities across England who have so far submitted their data as part of a new speed camera transparency initiative.
The RAC commented "Unless this information is acted upon by local authorities then it becomes a pointless exercise. We've long called for a full audit of individual speed cameras, ensuring we keep the cameras that make a difference and replace those that don't with other safety measures." _________________ Robert Brady |

This just proves what a lot a us have said all along. Most so called 'Safety Cameras' have nothing to do with road safety and everything to do with raising money.
All those that have not had any effect on road safety should be removed including the camera boxes. _________________ Dave R (h5djr)

It was the part of the report that I caught on the TV last night that said something to the effect of a camera was installed on a road with NO accidents... and since its installation, there have been 5.
Why the hell did they install a camera on a perfectly safe road to start with!?

Interesting article about accident statistics -
How do accidents happen?
speeding accounts for only 13.9% per cent of fatal accidents - Quote: | A bigger cause [15.9 per cent] is going too fast for the conditions – entering a bend too quickly, for instance – when you might well be under the actual speed limit." |
Biggest cause of road accidents in the UK today is "driver error or reaction". _________________ J. |

The IAM has analysed 700,000 RTAs. The result is a bit frightening, not a lot is to do with speed: Link to IAM reports Here

See, the sCamera partnership will say that just goes to "prove" that a camera was needed and it would have been much worse without it. Or something. _________________ Gone fishing! |

I'd be happy with cameras to detect tail-gaters _________________ J. |

Yes but that doesn't do anything to teach them they should drive differently - especially since the reason I am hanging back slightly from car in front is it has the word Police in large letters _________________ J. |
