Planning a journey of 122 miles, on completely unknown roads. Due to
various health reasons, the Mrs can need to go to the toilet more often
than some. Now this journey will be on A roads mainly, so we'll lack the
"services in 1 & x miles" signs.
Occurred to me that a neat feature for Sat Navs would be an overlay which
permanently displayed the 2 nearest services in the same fashion as
motorways do.
While we're at it, does anyone know of a Satnav which lets you mute the
voice, but still sound for cameras ? Mine (Garmin nuvi 250) doesn't. I
did have the idea of deleting the Afrikaans voice data, and switching to
that - hopefully it would be silent when directing, but I'd still hear
the beeps.

I would suggest that you download POI files for all major Supermarkets, you'll find toilets and other facilities at most of them nowadays. At these locations you'll find free and easily accessible parking and opening hours that should cover most needs, most branches are at least open until late if not 24 hours these days.
I travel extensively by road for my job and work odd hours, the Supermarkets are my get out of jail free card for food and toilets when I'm on the move. I've often called in and just used the toilets and never been noticed or questioned about it.
I think I've been a little misunderstood. It's not the *data* as such. It's the facility to display it whilst driving a programmed route. So that I have something in the display saying "services: 1 mile and 15 miles" automatically.
I know I could stop and search the Garmins database, but the whole point was *not* to stop. To be frank, if you have to stop to find the nearest services, you don't need a sat nav - a good atlas would do.
My wife struggles to see clearly, and can't operate the sat nav, so passing it to her and asking her to try and locate nearest services is also not an option.

The better TomTom devices would do a pretty good job of this for you. Perhaps not exactly, but close enough. I'm talking the GO550/750/950 range, NOT the latest models (1000, 1005, Start, 120 etc) which are dodgy with this aspect.
On a TomTom you could load up the Public toilets and jeta1's excellent suggestion of Supermarkets. You configure them to show on map and also "Warn when near POI", set the distance to 1,500 yards. They will not only show icons on the map as you drive by, but also shout to say they are nearby. It's not "Whatever at 1 mile and 15 miles" though.
On that range of models, you can also set the voice to disable navigation instructions and it will still warn for the facilities. _________________ Dennis

Shame there's no thanks button ! Thanks. Reading the Manual for the 250, it seems I can load a POI file, and set an alert when near. Not perfect, but certainly an aid ... the trick is to feel relaxed and in control - then you can guarantee we won't need it !
Just replace the speed camera files with the POI files - the process is the same except you would want to choose the 'manual' install in POI Loader so you can specify the alert distance (the speed cams have data inthem to automate the alert).
