VIA Live is resistive touch screen. Seeing mixed reports of the screen for the 8xx...

Where did you see that Dennis? no mention that I can see of the touch screen being capacitive on the TomTom product page?

Can someone explain please what a 'capacative screen' actually is?
Thanks

It's one that can sense more than just a tap. So you can deploy gestures such as a finger swipe left/right to move forwards/backwards through the menu, pinch to zoom etc etc.

The GO 100x have these screens and support gestures but I can confirm that the GO 800 series does not.

Darren, thanks for the confirmation that the 800 line doesn't have the same 'capacative' capability as the 1000 line. However, does the 825 model have the same glass screen which provides the same bright and colourful image as it's big brother?
Thanks

The bright screen is another feature/side effect of a capacitive screen. None of the 800 series have this.

Slightly odd Q & A with TomTom on twitter yesterday/today:

MaFt said: @TomTom What's the difference between the GO Live 825 and VIA Live 125? Same design, same features(?), same price...?!

TomTom replied: @MaFt yep, we're simplifying our range. GO = LIVE. Start/Via = non LIVE...

So the VIA Live, by their definition, no longer exists. I assume that *new* devices from now on with the VIA name will NOT have live services and GO devices will.

I suspect something got confused there, as I understand it, Via is no more.

Yeah, me too - so I queried it:

@TomTom So the VIA Live no longer exists then? Seeing as you said VIA has no live services?

@MaFt it will take some months for it to be replaced completely by the GO 820 Live...but the intention eventually is to simplify the range

Apologies for this Darren. I would have put money on it having said that when I checked them, otherwise my question is nonsense. I'm really confident it did. I had two screens up to compare the two specs. But it doesn't now. 'Course, I was young and foolish then! Embarassed

It makes sense for the 800 series not to have this feature otherwise there would be little to differentiate to from the 100x other than the differences in mount design.

Kinda obvious that a 2.5 GB map will fit on a 16GB card? Smile

AFAIK, ever since the zoned maps were introduced it has always been possible to get the full un-zoned map if you had enough memory space available. For example I moved the N.America map to an SD card and was able to put the full Europe map on a Go940's internal memory.

I finally broke down at this last weekend and upgraded from my old H2210 and TTv6 to a 1005. I was at great pains to choose between the 825 and the 1005 because of the SD slot which will surely mean some kind of extra add-ons in the future, but two things stopped me buying the 825.
1. The lumpy screen-mount stuck on the back
2. The screens are NOT the same. The 825 screen is a nice matt shade but but touch-screen operations were nowhere nearly as slick as on the 1005.
What a shame, as the matt finish on the 825 screen must be an improvement over the highly polished 1005 screen.
Does anyone know where I can get a goose-neck screen mount for my 1005? My arms aren't long enough to reach the lovely 1005 with its short mounting.
