I am currently running this latest map on both my iphone4 and 1005. I actually live in Prestatyn, North Wales. Three mile up the road is Sunny Rhyl.
Anyone know why on this map release they have decided to use Welsh Street names eg Stryd y Dwr instead of Water Street which is actually what the street name plate reads?
Secondly, navigate to N53d 19.278'. W3d 29.450'. What on earth is Wheelers Drive? I've lived in this area for 20 hrs. That street is the towns High Steet. I've never even heard of Wheelers Drive! |

This sounds like the Welsh lobby has pressurised them into using Welsh names. I love Wales countryside, but I'm always amazed at their desire to show roadsigns with Welsh names first, English second - considering the option of tourism, I wonder how many foreign visitors struggle with them? I know I do!
Looking at Google Maps and Streetmap.co.uk, you can see occasionally both names shown. Wheelers Drive appears to perhaps be a pedestrian section at the southern end of Stryd Fawr, one map includes High Street. For Stryd y Dwr, one map has Stryd y Dwr/Water Street. For any TT owner wanting to visit Clywd Alyn Housing Association Ltd, or Maes Glanfaron Housing Association Ltd, 46-54 Water Street, Rhyl, they'd better not try navigating to Water Street, because it won't! I guess this is a good example for you to take a photo of the street nameplate to send to TomTom. I can remember previous versions which supported both languages, e.g. it would happily navigate to Heol Ysgol or School Road (that's made up because I can't remember Welsh for Church, sorry ) _________________ Dennis

Dennis, thanks for your reply. An easy work around for the Welsh street name issue is to find out your destinations postcode and navigate to that. That method should avoid the street name I think. |

Hopefully, the postcode database is correct or you're in trouble.
Despite correcting the postcode for my own address countless times, TT still feel that they know better then Royal Mail when it comes to postcodes GGRRR _________________ Andy

Google reveals that the postcode for those two is LL18 1SJ. Give it a try on your TomTom! _________________ Dennis

You could try Royal Mail Postcode finder. Incidentally, that page is available in Welsh too.
Perhaps you need to be a beta tester for TomTom Go Go Goch to navigate correctly in Wales _________________ Andy

Good one that ;-)
Dennis, the post code you quote gives the correct location.
Thanks. |

Sounds like devolution has gone to there heads! Perhaps there are welsh sympathizers in TT HQ?
On a side note, why on earth anyone would want to purposely navigate to Rhyl is beyond me! Just my opinion though |

This sounds like the Welsh lobby has pressurised them into using Welsh names. |
This seems to be very common politically correct berhaviour nowadays....
On TomToms with "Reality View" of the roadsigns at junctions, TT usually use the first placename on the sign.
In Ireland, that is usually the Gaelic name, and I've had big discussions on another forum with someone from there who thinks the English name "that everyone uses" should be used instead
(wheras I think to be consistent the first name should always be used, as a tourist might not know EITHER language).
Also, for a while, Google maps started using the local languages for all country and city names - which meant you couldn't even find most countries if you only knew the English, and often they weren't even in our script (eg Greece). _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Perhaps it is worth mentioning that Water Street in Rhyl has NOT changed in this map - it was not in map 865 either. I don't know when it changed, but it was all in English for map 675.1409, Western Europe on my Navigator 6 - not a single Heol or Stryd to be seen. _________________ Dennis

Has it been a MapShare corruption (sorry, "correction")??
I've noticed a few anomolies, but not sure exactly when they crept in - and that's without the complication of an additional language _________________ Andy

Unlikely - I think even our own MapShare National Champion would find it hard work doing corrections for all the Welsh names! _________________ Dennis
