Hi,
After using your database for several years on my iPaq based TomTom, the auto update feature is just SO easy to use! You've made a fantastic Android app, just what my G2 (and soon to be HTC Desire) was made for!
And I got a lifetime sub for my first report so I'm well chuffed.
A couple of suggestions:
1) Night mode (either user activated or via a sensor?)
2) USB mode, turn on warnings and GPS when plugged in, stop all warnings and GPS when unplugged. If I could leave it running all the time that would stop me either killing the battery or forgetting to turn it on!
3) HUD mode, either user activated or from the gyro when I lay the phone down?

the default colour scheme on android is black/dark so we didn't add day/night mode in the android version. we cannot, unfortunately, change the map colours though. as a workaround you could set the map display to satellite which is generally darker than the normal map colours anyway.

sounds like a useful idea. it would need to be an option though as i sometimes don't bother charging the phone on short trips. it may also cause problems with people forgetting they turned the option on and wondering why they get no alerts/gps fix!

we have it in the iPhone version but it hasn't made it into the android version yet. from what lutz has said it is quite tricky on this platform... it is being looked at though.

Thanks for the quick reply.
On the night mode issue, I was hopeful as Google have implemented a night mode for navigation (but not on maps ... yet). I'm not a programmer but I can see a "setBackgroundColor" method in class MapView (inherited from class android.view.View), could that be used?
On the USB detection mode, yes this would definitely have to be an option. I'm going to buy a cradle when I get my new phone so it will always have power in the car.
On the HUD mode, I already use SpeedView which shows the speed / heading etc. If you could do a speed / camera warning HUD that would be most excellent.

the navigation app uses vector rendering. something not available to developers to use. even the new maps v5 which uses the vectors isn;t available to dev's yet. basically what the maps are that we can use are bitmaps of a static map. we just download the tiles (areas) that are needed. they only offer one set of colours for these maps so it's not something we can do anything with.
pretty certain the setBackgroundColor will be the colour of the view if no maps are loaded - i.e. literally the background colour and NOT the background colour of the map tiles themselves.

Hello again.
I've been using sat mode and yes, it's a bit better when the map is loaded, but on my route home there are large parts of the trip when I'm only getting GPRS so the map doesn't load and I'm seeing a lot of the white background.
It would be great to have a night mode with inverted buttons and speed display with a black background.
Other than that, roll on the maps v5 SDK and me getting a new phone...

| What about overlaying a semi transparent grey box over the map area at night? Or if the phone has it, when the light level detector sees low light? |

Think I've suggested this to Lutz before now too  I know in iOS we can't access the light sensor (well, not if we want the app to be approved!)
Worth looking at anyway. I also offered some other rather clever methods too but i think they will be too memory intensive!

I use EZCam and Cameralert on my HTC Desire, EZCam does have a night maps mode - seems to work fine, have you looked at that?
I find at the moment, I use EZCam most of the time, because of the brilliant Speed/Av Speed overlay - I like the Cameralert product, and the database is great, but I find your software lagging slightly behind in functionality over the competition |

what do they use for the night maps? OSM? If so then how does it cope in areas of poor map coverage as there would be no map shown...!

Ah, OK, possibly uses a semi-transparent overlay to dim it then... Something we can look into.
