Cheap and cheerful motorbike GPS

I can buy a cheap, functional Sat Nav for a car for as little as £50-£60, and yet most bike sat navs seem to be extortionate 'top of the range' models. Can anyone recommend a cheap one. I don't want it to do much except route plan, and maybe POI but this isn't essential. The problem I'm finding is that most of the ones available don't signify if they're waterproof or not.

You can assume that the only waterproof ones are the TomTom Rider and the Garmin Zumo. They are also (as far as I know) the only ones that come with a dedicated motorcycle mount.

Yes, they are expensive, but they have extras like easy to use with gloves on.

Buy a cheap one by all means, but you have to live with the consequences.

I did blow up an Ipaq with Tomtom on it because I got caught in the rain.

I've bee unsing a normal Garmin Nuvi 310 on my bike. Cost me about a third the price of a Zumo. It isn't waterproof. With my fairing it does not get wet on the move. A sandwich bag over the top will keep it dry. See my website www.adrianmolloy.com

Ive been successfully using a Navigo was about 50 quid from ebuyer.
Just use clingfilm to waterproof it. As standard it plays MP3 and videos
It is also a windows CE based (with a bit of tweaking plenty of help out there) so I have tried TomTom, MioMap and Route66 software on it. It will also load MemoryMap which lets you use ordnance survey maps (no route planning but does show position) absolutely brilliant if you want to go somewhere different from the SatNav lemmings. It also lets you run any windows ce software so you can take ebooks PDFs etc with you on SD cards absolutely brilliant if you like to travel light. Use the money you save on a grossly overprced Garmin or TomTom to buy a ferry ticket and petrol Very Happy

You could also google becker crocodile a new one on the market in October and supposedly about 300 euros , waterproof as well.

I'm still using my Garmin i3 on the bikes, on the old ZX10 it fits inside the fairing so keeps dry, on the Speed triple it either wrap it in cling film (once the route is set or use a zip lock plastic bag. the Cling film works better as the bag can move around and obscure the scren a bit.

Sorry to bump a real old thread, but I have Zumo 500 on my bike and would prefer to move over to a TomTom based unit. Rider V2 is going to cost my around £300 but I like the idea of getting Navigo for £50 and installing TT7 on it Smile

A couple of questions though -

1) Does cling film really save the unit in bad rain?

2) Can you cling film it once and then use it with the cling film on?

3) I have some silicone sealer, are there obvious areas I could just seal and it would be waterproof without cling film?

4) How do you mount this unit to your bike?

I plumped for the RAC 5000, 5 inch screen, 3.5 audio out, winCe. Put Sygic mobile maps europe on it.

Have a look in google for peaklife its a fully waterproof for motorcycle's unit. Runs wince 5/6 it costs around £73 and as standard comes with a powered motorcycle mount a car mount and just about everything you need except a sat nav program.

I put IGO Primo 2 on with the latest European maps and it works brilliantly. also double's up as a music/video/picture player and if your listening to music and a nav instruction comes up it mutes the music. Has a speaker and Bluetooth (I use it with my viper helmet no problem at all)

Its well constructed in a ruggedized case all access to internal parts are seal with O-rings etc.

Supports up to an 8GB micro SD so plenty of room for maps/music etc

Samsung 400Mhz processor and 128MB internal ram.
