personally i prefer it the old way. far less daunting for newcomers and it's much easier to see all the categories on one screen so a user comes loking for Garmin stuff and they see the link for garmin discussion and click on that. now, with the full list expanded, they simply won't see it without a lot of scrolling to get to it...
as a compromise can we make the tab link to the full list and the 'index' link in the dropdown go to the compressed version?

Makes sense to me - so clicking on the "forum" tab itself goes to the compressed menu and clicking on the "forum index" below it (or anywhere else) takes you to the expanded one? |

To me, "Forum index" means the full index
and "Forum" means whatever view you want. |

well, if we look up a dictionary definition of 'index' we get: "a light, smooth cardboard stock."
so, we're all knackered really!
maybe 'forums by category' for the compressed list?
