It's bizarre. They claim lack of cash to fund the SCP's and to explain the switch-off yet continue to find the cash for mobile camera vans.
Now I'm no expert but once a camera has been purchased, I can't see it costing much to run. And even less if it's just left there in dummy mode with no camera fitted.
How can it be less expensive to operate one or more camera vans that require staff, vehicle maintenance, fuel etc? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Second point:- It can't be less expensive, can it But the police have not said that they would continue with the SCP vans, only 'mobile cameras'. Probably plod witl LTi20-20

Call me cynical but... the answer may be that the SCP needs to find a way to get rid of the old static cameras without suggesting that they dont work.
In some cases (Oxfordshire) the cameras still use wet film. That means that they would need be to serviced more often than the new digital ones.
Probably the most important factor for the SCPs wanting to get rid of the cameras is that they no longer generate revenue as everyone knows where they are.
The future for speed cameras has to be the average speed cams over proven sections of road with high accident rates, backed up by mobile cameras on random schedules. _________________ Mike Barrett |
