Hi
Is there a a way to have the latest version of the database downloaded (network permitting) automatically on startup, if required?
If not, please consider this a feature request

it's something we're considering but need to work out the best way to do it. obviously we don't want to offend anyone by forcing the automagic download and eating into people's data or even roaming data!

Fair enough, obviously it should be optional, I suppose the question is whether it's on or off by default.
If people don't want roaming data usage they'll have it switched off in the iPhone settings - if not it won't just be CamerAlert that's costing them money!

I would not want an option to automatically download the database using GPRS. I very rarely use GPRS to download the database.
I'd like an option to automatically download the database using WiFi. However you have to decide when it's to be downloaded, using one or more of the following scenarios:
1. Only when a new version of the camera database is released.
2. Every time that the database is updated (between versions).
3. Specific times in the day, so that you have an up-to-date DB for going to work and again for going home.
4. Every x minutes or every y hours.

i would assume that the automated download would only be when the database number is increased - i.e. on the wednesday main release. an option to do it every few hours etc could have issues with server overload.

I think the current manual download system is best.
If you've set your device to download automatically and you're happily driving along, what if the database download goes awry? You could be in a position where CamerAlert doesn't warn you of cameras or you may be forced to pull over and sort it out.
What if you lose the GPRS signal mid-download?
Unless you have CamerAlert running whilst you're not driving, the only time it will be able to download automatically is whilst you are driving. _________________ Andy

And is it really that onerous to download? You get alerted so you're unlikely to miss the fact that an update is available. And all it takes is a couple of taps of the screen once per week.
Do we really need to automate that? _________________ Darren Griffin |

It would be a useful addition to an already great app, save a few taps (like the "Also Run" feature in the latest version, which I really like), and ensure that more people are using the latest database version.
Maybe only having it check (say) once per day would be sensible, to manage the load on your servers.

So I start the app and every week this woman starts blabbering on about there being a new database. So I tap settings, manage cameras (wait 10 seconds while it checks), Download database (wait a minute or two while it downloads), tap done.
Automate that? Yes please. Or is there a short cut to doing this that I missed?
I just want to start the app, it checks for a new database and quietly downloads it. Or failing that, what about you display a popup with "New database available, update Now? Yes / No"
As for the amount of data to be downloaded while roaming, why not rework your client/server code to just send the deltas or implement something like rsync? A bit more server side processing but a lot of mobile bandwidth saved...
Just a thought... _________________ Gone fishing! |

Automating that part was one of my suggestions too, as was having an icon to accompany this new database alert.
In fact, I think I went as far as saying that this icon could serve that very purpose - ie straight from map screen to database download with one tap _________________ Andy

Here is that very post from last December.
This also reiterates what I was asking in another area of the forum regarding some kind of feedback mechanism for enhancement suggestions which users have made. _________________ Andy

We do have a list where we collect all the user suggestions, and we periodically discuss these in the team. Currently we're not ready to make that list public, but this may change in the future. _________________ Lutz
