If you Google some of the more respected US Radar testing forum sites you will quickly find that these are almost pure hokum and serve no useful purpose other than confirming that you have just been nabbed.
The one you have linked to doesn't interact in any way with the satnav other than to share the power socket. It has a USB output into which you plug your SatNav for power only.
Laser speed guns operate within a very narrow beam and only for as long as the operator holds the trigger. The laser detector retailers will claim that they pick up 'scatter' and provide you with a warning but in practice this is highly unlikely and will so rarely happen as to make then entirely useless.
Save your money. _________________ Darren Griffin

1) It doesn't work with a device as such. The compatibilty is just where the power leads can be used with the supplied splitter. It claims the 940 is compatible so the 540 and 740 should be ok
2) What's the point? By the time you even notice the alert and react to it - it's too late.... |

I once read an article in which a laser detector was memorably described as being about as much use as a bullet detector. |

Possibly a minor point I know ... but isn't their use also illegal in the UK anyway? So possibly even more costly than a bullet detector as well _________________ David

I had a Bel Euro 550 Radar Detector a few years ago, which was very good at picking up and warning in time of things such as radar controlled GATSOs and hand held radar traps. I think that it was one of the best radar detectors available in its time
The Bel Euro 550 Radar Detector also had a Laser detection function which was useless, purely because as has already been mention above, as the Laser speed guns operate within a very narrow beam for a very short period of time (half a second or so) so your number plate could be targeted and the laser detector on your dashboard would probably not even register.

OK, so it tells the soldier where the fire is coming from. Too late if the bullet is heading his way. There is a similar sort if source detector for laser speed cams as well. It's based on visual techniques, and can be identified by a person in a hi-viz jacket pointing a gun like thing at you. |

I guess though that in a proper war situation, if it got a reasonable fix on the source, this would be of use, given that enemy fire isn't always 100% accurate all of the time and, in any case, presumably other soldiers than the direct target would also have them.
I take it from the discussion however, that a laser would NOT be detected if it was aimed at the car next to you, but only if it WAS your car being 'sniped' at? _________________ David

Indeed, in the case of Afghanistan, enemy fire is rarely that accurate and being able to instantly tell in which direction it came from is very useful. I only posted it as a light hearted response though.

Correct, the chances of the laser beam bouncing off such that the reflection was detected by a dash mounted laser detector is slim to none.
On the rare occasions where it has worked, it had passed through a vehicle ahead and been thus detected. And the conditions where that would happen, and be of any use, are a tiny fraction of oner percent.
There is only one way to avoid laser speed guns, don't be speeding. _________________ Darren Griffin |
