I thought it was time to try another budget GPS Device.
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5043220.htm
And at £80.00 it is not so bad.
When you first power it up you have to enter the "Start Up Key" which is on the outside box side and then it seems to activate the area in question map.
It then says your camera trial runs out in under days and checking their website the answer is to go for a long fast drive without slowing down!
Quote: | We are aware that some customers may be experiencing one of the following subscription expiry messages upon start up of their new MioSpirit or MioNavman:
"One of your subscriptions will expire in xx day(s). You can renew it via MioMore Desktop. Would you like to be reminded again?"
"One or more of your map subscriptions have expired. Please renew your subscriptions via MioMore Desktop"
These messages are related to the 12 month free Safety Camera trial and appear due to an incorrect date setting on your device. To resolve this, please obtain a GPS fix on your device and ensure you travel over 40mph for 20 minutes. By doing this, you will create a 'First Use Date' on your device which will re-set your 12 month Safety Camera Subscription trial for the correct amount of time. You will then not see a message until your trial is due to expire in 12 months time.
We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
This applies to the following devices:
MioSpirit/MioNavman:
370 / 378 / 470 / 474 / 475 / 478 / 479 / 570 / 575 / 578 / 579 / 675 / V570 TV / V575 TV |
Once home I linked up the device and noted it had hardly any disk space free, about 76megs.
I then tried to install the MioMore Desktop 2 which comes on a DVD on my Windows 7 64bit edition.
Nothing much seemed to happen even when I tried to run setup direct as Adminsitrator.
Back on their website it says you can download a new version but you have to register first.
Download is only 1.3Gb and then has to be burnt onto a DVD.
This still would not work until I turned off my A/V protection (Avast).
Three updates were then offered, map for the device and an update to the software I just downloaded.
I first upgraded the software, then the unit software followed by the map.
All went well and the device has a lot more free space as I guess in reality it had all europe maps.
I then backed up the device with the MioMore s/w
Afterwards, I thought they had fixed the speed camera trial warning but instead it seems to have deleted them when it installed the new map.
I have emailed their support to see if they can fix.
Device has an option to record track but no option to make use of the data and I tried poi's in the two different poi folders but no luck
No auto power off when it looses 12v which is a shame and 12v power lead could be a bit longer.
Any thoughts on custom POI's for this model?

Yes when you initially purchase the device they do have all 44 countries pre-loaded so after updating then if you purchased a UK only the unused maps are removed.
The 478 should use the MioMore Desktop V7.00 and then the updated version V7.30 |

I'm also looking at Mio 478 from Argos £80
Nealr y bought it today but what stalled me was the picture of
Mio Navman 478 @ £80
compared to
Mio Navman 475 @ £90
The map/screen shot looks completely different - I went in store today to compare the two and
No return policy on these so I'm trying to confirm it is same model & same software & same map before I buy
Can you confirm which software/map is default on 478? |

I bet it is the case they just have one device image and the unlock just disables the other areas.
But when it donwloads an update you only get the areas you buy,
Indded, now have Version 7.30 of the software.
I have just been for a short 6 mile trip and my car JVC one also with new Teleatlas maps told me to go over a level crossing rather than a flyover (Newhaven) and turn down a dead end street rather than take the next on the left.
The new maps even have 30mph for my little street and it beeps and the speed icon turns red when you break the limit.
It can also display your actual speed as well on the display.

Another setting I use a lot on my C250 is 'arrival time' - it displays any number of things on desktop including time you're due to arrive at the destination
I cant see any mention of settings (apart from basic language and actual time) in instructions for the 478 - can it display anything like that? |

Can someone tell me if the pocket gps camera database is compatiable with the Navman Mio 478 and the 475?
Thinking of getting one of these units, the 475 is £10 dearer but has live traffic.
Used to subscribe to the database before for my tomtom xl with all the speed zones etc.
Don't wanna get the unit if I can't use this database on it
Cheers

475 also comes with 2 years free map updates if you get it from Argos or halfords - hence i swapped my 478 for 475
475 also supports custom POIs which may answer your question
i understand the 475 does support PGPS database albeit i haven't tried it yet

Cheers for the info, I used to have a Navman f10 and the Volume was poor on it compared to my tomtom xl,
What do you think of the volume on the 475? is it loud enough?
Cheers

Luvvin mine although i never had a tom tom
My volume was half way and i actually turned mine down a tad
Screen is great
Fast to startup and get a signal
Really easy to use
Updated my map to latest map the same day i got it
Changed the voice to U.S female which i prefer (it's a 'traffic circle' not a 'roundabout' :o)
Uses same tom tom signal technology for intelligent routing and lane routing |

Cheers for the info mate, went on the link but it wouldn't accept my serial number as i'd registered the device on the main site, the one the instalation disk directs you to.
I've e-mailed them re this so hopefully i'll hear something back |
