T3 has a small review of ROADRAMA ROAD100 (www.roadrama.com) in Issue 102 and gave it 5 stars.
The picture looks very much like its running Navigon MobileNavigator 4 and as it has TMC ability...
However, what grabbed my attention was:
iPAQ 4150, 256MB SD Card, UK street-level and European major-road maps, Voice prompts and commands & 12V adaptor, all for £300!
It isn't clear about the TMC and Bluetooth modules but even without these, £300 seems like a great price. Having said that, there is no more info on the web site. |

"Bluetoot" - I like that. Are they also a leading innovator in spelling? _________________ Lutz

The roadrama website is up now, and the prices are nothing like that advertised with the review - e.g. no PDA included! I thought it was much too good to be true...
Cheapest genuine source for Navigon MN4 with BT/TMC still seems to be the German e-tailers such as www.computeruniverse.net at around 419 Euros.

Is the Navigon Mobile Navigator 4 compatible with a Dell Axim X3i?
The price has dropped to 409 Euros on the link submitted by 'prusling'.
Thats very tempting |

Should work (Navigon needs a machine with more than 32 MB or RAM) _________________ Lutz

Ouch - does it need 32Mb available on the PDA? I'd have to remove a lot of programs to achieve that...
I'm still deliberating between:
- MN4 complete (mainly for free TMC and Euro maps)
- TT3 bluetooth (cheapest but traffic support will cost when available)
- CP5 plus Holux BT (vehicle locator plus wired/wireless GPS)
Decisions, decisions...

I spoke to Roadrama this afternoon.
£299 for the software + bluetooth kit
£35 for adaptor for Dell Axim
TMC add on not available yet (awaiting licences), but expects it to be a one off payment of around £160.
When questioned he confirmed it was based on Navigon mobile navigator but was not sure which version.
When I mentioned I could get the same from Germany, including the TMC add on for <£300 delivered, he went a little quiet .
I asked if they had modified it much, all he said was they have worked on the 'points of interest'.
Hope this helps

If it's with 3D maps, then should be version 4. |

Why would you need the adaptor if you're using bluetooth, or conversely why get the bluetooth if you're using the adaptor..... |

Thats how I understood it, but he seemed quite vague. It did have 3d maps so looks to be an expensive version of Navigon mobile navigator 4.
I think they have added Petrol stations etc as points of interest. Although it would be useful, the price is still too high. I think I will order the original MN4 from Germany. |

If I bought the software from Roadrama £159 I think it was, could I use it with the Navigon BT receiver and TMC adaptor that can be bought for £160 in Germany?
Could have the best of both worlds then. |

I suspected that Navigon did not have a licence for UK reception of TMC hence why they don't actively advertise that it will work here. TMC use is expensive and is licenced on a per country basis.
I would also expect that iTIS who operate TMC in the UK will be clamping down on this loophole pretty soon either by preventing Navigon from offering UK maps or forcing them to pay the licence fee which will be interesting! _________________ Darren Griffin |

Ok - the contents of the various boxes of the GPS/BT module & TMC module as dispatched to me by www.computeruniverse.net:
1. The GPS module contained:
GPS Module (including the dummy TMC module and the regular serial module)
Cigar lighter to 2 x 6-pin mini-DIN sockets cable
6-pin Mini-DIN to mini-USB cable
A handy little bag for putting it all in
(the latter two items form the power cable for powering the GPS unit)
2. The Bluetooth module box contained:
The Bluetooth module
A mains PSU with a mini-USB connector, fitted with the 2-pin euro mains connector
A UK mains connector
A US mains connector
An Australian mains connector
A small screwdriver for loosening the little screw that holds the adaptor in place on the mains PSU
3. The TMC module box contained:
The TMC module
The FM antenna (a bit of wire with a phono plug on the end)
So.... if you only want to use it as a Bluetooth device (like I did) you don't need to buy the PDA adaptor kit.
You'll notice I didn't mention instructions anywhere in the packing list.... that's because there were none, so if you don't have a Navigon MN4 manual to hand, you're totally on your own - on the plus side, it's very straightforward to set up.[/list] |

If it was bought now, therefore with UK maps, is there anyway they can levy a charge later on if this loophole is closed? |
