Hi
My old TomTom 700 is on it's way out - it has served me well for many years, but has started to get a little slow, and the screen is scratched and, well, I just fancy something a bit shinier I suppose.
So with TomTom 700 relegated to the wife's car, I need a replacement.
I REALLY like TomTom. I find the mapping and directions really clear, and the menu system really easy to navigate.
However - I have built up a few folders of personal POIs that I must be able to add to my new SatNav. TomTom still seem to want to stop me adding my own POI categories to thier devices, so I may have to change brand.
I do not like CoPilot - at least that is, I don't like the CoPilot on my IPhone.
I need-
Screen 5" (diagonal) or bigger
Ability to add own POI
All of Europe mapping
Are the built in TVs any good? - that might be a nice feature to have.
Suggestions please.

TomTom offer the refurbished GO750 Live, with free Live services for a year, £149.99. If you get it, hold off on using the latest map guarantee, because new maps are due before the end of February.
I've done a quick Google and can't find any more elsewhere right now - a 740 would have been better. I take it you've already decided against TT on your iPhone (or don't want the extra expense of the in-car mount)?
Your wife is getting the best deal here - the 700 isn't relegated, your wife is promoted!

Until TomTom sort out the POI issue that precludes them then. Garmin have a few large screen devices, we're getting a 2360LT in for review today. That has a 4.8" x 2.9" wide-screen display

I'd definitely consider some of the Garmin's. They have decent POI support, you can easily convert your existing TomTom format POIs and of course EU map equipped models are available.

No, dire, forget it. They rarely work using built-in antenna so unless you provide an external Freeview antenna it's pointless.

Another that might be of interest to you is the TomTom XXL from Totalpda.
5" screen, EU mapping, 3rd Party POIs and £145.
See 2 recent threads on the XXL, Here and Here; the second deals with the Europe maps, and the lack of an SD Card capability.

Ah I'd forgotten the XXL. That might be the better solution given Roger has been using TomTom.

Thanks so much for the prompt and informative replies.
Can you confirm though that the TomTom XXL can accept my POIs?
Because it was my understanding that all new TomToms were invisible to Winows Explorer (or similar).
If I can do this, it is problem solved! |

The first reply to your Jan 14th post answers that one. 
It's only the 100x series that has the problem with POIs. Also the VIA I believe.

Indeed - re-reading that made me recall why I had discounted the XXL.
I was not happy with the reloading different areas on a trip across Europe. I have a motorhome and travel frequently.
I am now pretty close to deciding on a Garmin 1490T. It seems a very good price, and I shall visit my local Halfords for a hands on look at one before taking the financial plunge.
Thanks for all your help.
I feel a bit guilty about transferring my brand allegiance away from TomTom, but I see the reduction in POI functionality as a real issue for me. I appreciate it is not necessarily a problem for other people.

Where did you get that mis-information?
If you get the Europe model, then it has pan-european mapping?

Nope, that's my fault. That limitation that had somehow completely passed me by, sorry.
What a ridiculous idea. You're right, it makes the XXL, completely unsuitable.
Now where were we before I threw in that red herring?

With my suggestion of the refurbished GO750 from TomTom (if he can't find a refurb 940 somewhere). Whilst the XXL might possibly come with what appears to be a 'complete' (as opposed to zonal) map of Europe, it'll be lost at the very first map update.
Or of course, he could get a cheapo, modern, up to date TT and give it to his wife and keep the 700 himself - that way he'd not get any of the crashes or poor sound and his phone woulkd still do handsfree and he'd have enough space for the new maps and so on and so on.

Yes a 750 Live refurb with a 4Gb sdhc* card for the slot will hold the whole W&CE map. I've just ordered a 550 live refurb to tide me over while TT sort out the 100x/Via devices. Why stick with TT? Because HD traffic is the best congestion avoidance system available to date.
Edit: *should say mini-sdhc.**

The 550 Live refurb arrived yesterday, backed it up, created new Home account, and connected it. First message 'Latest Map Guarantee has expired'. Updated to 9.058 without difficulty, though had opted out of mapshare to pre-empt the bug. Called CS this morning, was told there is no LMG on refurb devices. However when I pointed out that the map on the device was v840, they agreed it was a bit too out of date even for a refurb, and have placed a v860 map in my account - I will download it later.
They accepted that I had created a 'dummy account' without any concern.
The actual appearance of the device is to all intents 'as new'.
So for £129.99 [p&p free], I have something that will see me through the next 12 months or so, and by then the 100x/Via should be sorted out.
