So will those previously convicted by the 40mph cameras get their money back, so long as they were going under 50?

doubt it very much. likewise you cannot be prosecuted for something if it was made illegal after you did it. gotta work the same both ways.

This business about the awareness courses ... yes they make money (it's even nice to know some ex-coppers are entrepreneurs Wink ); BUT doesn't it make good sense to give speeders ONE opportunity to get the point ( Rolling Eyes ) - but is the tax payer or some charity supposed to pay for the costs of the course instead of the offender?

Can these cynics suggest some other realistic alternative to a straight 3 points + £60? And I'm not thinking of a total amnesty on camera busters:?

I think you should get a 1 point credit for every year of law abiding motoring up to a max of 3 points. These credits could then be offset against the occasional misdemeanour. So in effect you could have one minor lapse every 3 years without getting any points or having to go on an awareness course.

3 points is no big deal, most insurers will not be bothered about that so there's no problem, is there. Wink

I thought speeding infringements came off after 3 years anyway (or is it five?).

But most insurers still want to know at least 5 years back.
And they can declare the insurance null and void if you lied in any of your answers.

Almost certainly some will. I'm frequently passed by drivers tooling along at 70+ through SPECS zones, clearly oblivious to what they do and what 'average speed' means!

It would be interesting to make a freedom of information inquiry to find out how many have been caught in the first few days - quite a few passed me on the stretch from the thingy tunnel to the North Circular yesterday.

I dunno. I think so. you could try here - Search for Highways Agency who I presume are responsible for that road. Maybe they'd pass you to the camera operators?

If anyones been along there the last few evenings about 6ish the traffics been dreadful. The cameras wouldnt have been getting any 'customers' at all!!!

Also I understood the cameras were wireless & they could also catch you even if you went down the slip roads along the A13.

The reason the area is described as having 84 cameras is that there are cameras on the slip roads too. Although I have to say I'd expect you to have some difficulty running at over average 50 if you pop down the slip roads and back up again.
