Lutz has just finished reviewing the DeLorme Earthmate Blue Logger GPS.

DeLorme were kind enough to send us a review unit of their latest BlueTooth receiver, the Earthmate Blue Logger GPS. It stands out from the crowd of Bluetooth receivers quite a bit.

First of all, it's yellow. Very yellow, a typical Earthmate trademark. Then it's pretty small - smaller than the CoPilot receiver. Next it is packed with features - Logging, GPS post processing, replaceable battery. Package pricing starting from USD 149.95 plus tax and shipping/handling.

what is the warranty on the blue logger?? i read on their forums that one device came with a 60 day warranty.

Do I need to have a bluetooth on my computer to configure the bluelogger, do i even need to configure it?? Will it be optimal the way it comes from the factory for use with a pocketpc and copilot live??

Dave, Did you guys do any tiff tests for the bluelogger? Can we see the results? Either here or on the tiff comparison page?

ok 1 more question, does it come configured with the wass enabled?? It says in a wass review here that most units don't come with wass enabled. Is this something you need to configure via bluetooth on home pc or can it be configured via bluetooth software on pocketpc?

you can use it out of the box, and it comes with WAAS enabled. so you don't need to configure it, but then you miss all the nice logging functionality. And, as I mentioned in the review, the default configuration is not optimal for street navigation.

I'll have to lookup the fine print to answer the warranty question

so what is optimal street navigation settings??

Is it the 38400 nmea?

I would still need to further configure this out of the box then to use best with copilot right?

you don't need to configure it. It will work out of the box.

Ideal for street nav is

RMC 1s
GGA 1s
GSA 5s
GSV 5s

But there are other programs that need VTG, and still others that need GLL ...

So can I set those setting within CPL5?? Don't I need to set it to 38400?

Hehe. Nice try buddy. This here is the Blue Logger thread...

BT receivers don't normally care about the baud rate, they can adjust. But they are said to work best at 38400.

Does SiRFDemo successfully communicate with the Blue Logger? What other WinXP utilites will work with the Blue Logger? I am finding mostly PPC utilites.

At this time I am mainly interested in enable\disable SBAS (just to experiment) but may with to "tweak" other parqamneters in the future.

Please advise, thanks!

It comes with a Blue Logger Manager for the logging management. You can also use VisualGPS etc for monitoring. And of course any of the navigation or topo packages for PCs - all you need is a Bluetooth adapter on the PC.
