TomTom 910 RDS-TMC stops scanning (freezes).

From what I understand from the other post, there is not a similar improvement to be had for a 930T.

Or does soemone know better?

I’ve been using the tweaked mctx.dat file (set to 1110) for some time now.

It’s far superior to the old 2220 setting and it works as equally well on the continent

1) Far more traffic information (nation wide).
2) More precise traffic information.
3) Nearly always connected to TMC broadcasting radio station.

My TMC-RDS still seems to jam every now and again, but I guess I’ll just have to live with the problem.

Just got a RDS-TMC receiver for my 910 and had bookmarked the post for this very day! Can someone please help me, do I delete the string of text/icons in the mctx.dat file and replace with 11110 or do I put 11110 somewhere else?

Hi Alan,

You're on the right track

Open the mctx.dat file in Notepad or similar and change the string 2220 to read 1110.

Save the file over the top of the original mctx.dat file and off you go.

Since changing this setting my RDS-TMC adapter has been fantastic!

It's made it so easy to travel around Europe since it's now so accurate

Iv'e been warned (verbally & icon) of snow, fog etc and recently even received a warning for escaped cows on an autobahn I was travelling on in Germany!

22220 string does not appear to be in the file.

Do I delete the string (TX01C°óöÌVε .•P°Q'ξVNÖ÷$éÁ˜�ìdyáädGãz~z) and replace with 11110 or is it 1110?

Hi Alan,

this is because the mctx.dat file on your TomTom is the wrong version

This isn’t your fault; this is due to a TomTom cockup

The v7.900 & v7.903 Navcore updates install the wrong version of the mctx.dat file!

The best way to correct the issue is to copy the mctx.dat file from one of your backups before the Navcore was updated and edit that file.

My last two backups (which is all I keep - in future I will keep them all) have the same corrupted Mctx file!!

I have left mctx.dat file with only the string 11110 in it and have deleted everything else.

Do i still need to delete the gns file?

Deleting the gnsdata file in the gns folder won’t do any harm.

This file is automatically recreated when your TomTom next receives TMC data.

Personally I would delete it on this occasion as you’re tinkering with the way your TMC works

I was intrigued by this thread so thought I would give it a try on my 720. I removed the existing mctx.dat file (and saved it to my desktop!). As described by others, it contained a string of gibberish characters.
Using notepad I created a new file containing only 11110 and renamed it to mctx.dat I then copied it into my TomTom and the RDS-TMC works fine. I can't yet say that it works better as I haven't been into the areas where I used to lose signal, but it certainly seemed to pick up its first lock quicker than usual.
I haven't burnt my boats though, as the version of TomTom which i have modified is on a 4GB SD card containing the full Western Europe map. The device itself also contains the latest Navcore, plus the Western zone WE map. If it plays up on the road later, I'll just remove the SD card until I get home

Interesting....

I was led to believe that it didn't work on the newer Navcores/units

On the old setting it only picks up TMC from Classic FM station which is flaky at the best of times.

On the new settings it should get its TMC info from all over the place and should stay pretty much connected all of the time.

I find that when you hit Poland, Slovakia etc (e.g. Central Europe) it becomes very intermittent again.
I haven’t tried going back to the 22220 setting when this happens, perhaps the old setting would work better in these countries?
I can try this in January when I drive back to Slovakia.

Robin2, you should be able to see the RDS frequency it's locked onto at the bottom of the Traffic menu.
