you will find that your Garmin can stay in the case... For the last 5 or 6 trips I have made to the USA I have used the iPhone for navigation. In fact the only time I have used a SatNav is when I am surveying POIs and Red Light cameras.

I use a Griffin power cable, you need to make sure that it is "Made For iPhone" as some I have tried do not charge the phone properly. I also use a 3.5mm stereo cable to connect to the car's head unit. Again I have found that the vast majority of cars over the last 3 years have an aux input. In fact only 1 car out of about 15 has not had it and that was nearly 3 years ago.

I have never been happy with FM transmitters though they do work better in the US than they do in the UK, but you will still get interference from regular stations. I have actually found that the output from the iPhone itself can be sufficient even at motorway speeds, but not for listening to music.

Hi,
Thanks for the info. I will leave the FM transmitter then and get the charger and aux cable.
Cheers, Rich

I agree re aux over FM, however if you have an old car,..... I use the IPAD for navigation in a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee as well as a newer Volvo C70....... and the Jeep doesn't have aux, I tried FM but then bought a very cheap, cassette adapter which works without any drop out or interference. May buy some spares as I suspect these are on the verge of obsolescence.

As iPhone developer and publisher I can say categorically that your correct. There is No specific Apple bar on the downloading of data and POI's are just that, XML data. Apple do bar App downloading binary executables for obvious reasons.

We proved this a long time ago with our CamerAlert application, and a number of other companies have implemented similar mechanisms to achieve the same results. It is more a question of desire to add the functionality, which TomTom seem reluctant to do, even for their main-stream devices, at the moment.
