When switching on my i3 without an SD card inserted, it does indeed throw up a page requesting that an SD card be inserted. However then pressing and briefly holding down the left hand button produces the normal 'Where To? - View Map - Settings' page. From then on it operates as normal but obviously using the built in base map only.
I have little doubt that on my i3, the operating software does not require the SD card to function and that iandee's purchase will work in his i3. I look forward to his post, as promised, as to how he gets on.

Well here I am in Florida.
Map duly received just before we left UK.
Now the microSd card inserted.
I am aware it will need time to 'find' me, but I have had it switched on and left outside, under the BLUE sky (I remember them now) for about 3 hours, but not found me yet.
Any idea how long it will take?
Aany idea where te best place to put it to receive the sat? e.g. facing N, Ss E W, indeed where is the 'arieal'?
I have done the following so far.
set the timje zone to US Eastern, Battery NiMH, GPS 'Normal' [whats NAAS/EGNOS] ; confirmed the MApSource is 'CN North America N7 2011-20; MapView 3D, Car use'
I have put it just into Map View. It says the usuaal Acquiring Satellites and also had the usual message ;Are you in doorss or out - confirmed OUT ; and the confirmmed I HAVE moved more than 100 miles since last used.
But I am still getting, Acquiring Sattelites with the blue triangle and winking QUestion MArk.
Any help please
sorry about the spelling! _________________ Ian Dee,

Hi iandee, I presume that the outside position you left your i3 in was well clear of any buildings, trees and the like. If so then I suggest you change the batteries for unused brand new non rechargeables and set the system to use WAAS/EGNOS (google this to see what it is and all about it). If this still fails to get a satellite lock then the next thing to try is a full reset of the device by holding down the left and centre buttons whilst pressing the right button to turn the device on. Beware though, this will remove all you own settings including favourites etc.
My own guess is that a battery change will suffice.

Yes I did all that but am delighted to advise that eventually it did 'find me. Bit concerned that it said insufficient memory to continue, but I cancelled that message and heigh ho, the screen showed my position/road etc.
Have been out and about today and it works fine.
Thanks for all your help, nice to know the forums members are as helpful to the 'little people. with old sat navs!
Incidentally, interesting to note that at MCO Orlando Airport they were 'pushing' to rent out sat navs - thye poster showed a picture of the StreetPilot i3! _________________ Ian Dee,

Hi, now back from Florida to report on this.
I had ordered the maps from PentagonGps as recommended here, on 11th November
Not having heard anything, I phoned on the 17th November, Wednesday- we were flying out on the Sunday 21st! A 2BG microSd inside an SD adapter, the SP3 is only a micro card, so it was very tiny.
I dont know why it cost £8 to post, InsuranceI suppose, although I had the impression it quoted less on their web site.
They advised that the order had been cancelled as the credit card was invalid! It turned out that their system rejected it as the post code was incorrect. On checking the details on the phone the details WERE correct and they processed it manually on the phone ONLY after I had confirmed with them that it would arrive ON the Friday as it would not be any good if it arrived after (assuming that the post would not be on time at this Christmas period) I was assured that I would receive it on Friday at the latest. It arrived on the Saturday! Not too impressed with PentagonGps, they did not advise me that the original order had been cancelled nor had they credited me with a resulting refund.
However, after taking a while to recognise the Sat nav, as mentioned, it worked fine.
Only thing was that there is no way to input the zip code, but only the House nhumber and city. Fortunately I could get the house number from the Internet ( e.g. a furniture store had a house number of 6645!.
On my return to UK and reinserting the UK map I was pleased that it did not take long to recognise the UK after it had asked 'Have I moved hundreds of miles since last used.
All My Favorites including the UK & US ones are shown, so stored on the device and not the sd card ( e.g. it recorded that I was 4403 miles from my house.
I of course had to rest the Time Zone.
Many thanks for all your help on this.
Whilst in US I bought a satnav map from Best Buy, which works well with my Scenic ( and the 2 cars I had in USA. _________________ Ian Dee,
