hello all, new to the forum and seeking some advice about my tom tom.
I have a tomtom one it says its 4n00.012.
The problem is that my wife tried to plug it in and has damaged the pins and block for charging, as this tomtom has been reliable to me and i rely on this to work over the next couple of days i don’t have time to get it repaired. i am wondering if i could do a slight modification without damaging it. Here goes this was my plan - because the unit does not charge from the connector i opened it up and wanted to see how easy it would be to resolder a new block on, i am not good with a soldering iron and have asked other shops with replies that's going to out cost what the thing is worth.
My plan is to remove the battery and cut the 3 wires that go from the board to the battery and simply bring in the 2 wire's from my 5v car charger through the case and connect them 2 the other wires bypassing the battery.
I see an advantage to this is i am not relying on a battery for the unit to power up it's hardwired to the charger.....Would this work
The battery is a Maxell battery with 3 wires red, yellow and black. from the charger i have a black and a red, would it be as simple as joining these and able to power the unit up. I know it sounds kind of dodgy, but i would fully protect each wire from touching etc.
Any help would be great thanks. |

Have a closer look at the battery and you will see its rated at 3,7 Volts, if you cut the wires and feed 5 Volts directly to the PCB you will let all the smoke out and the device will fail to work ever again.
If you can rig up a 3,7 volt feed in to the unit then the idea has some merit but you need to be very careful with voltage regulation otherwise the smoke will escape with the same resulting damage.
Go and purchase a new unit as its going to cost more to repair to be honest - Mike |

Is the power input socket the old style DC Jack or the newer USB connector?
Where are you based? It would be better to try to find a repairer with a better pricing structure (I might offer to try myself) |

if i could get a new charging block soldered on then great, but would possibly cost more than its worth. the black plastic bit on the inside of the block (with the pins) is not secured, the little holder at the back of the block connector has snapped meaning the pins dont line up with the board. |
