Advanced Safety and Driver Support for Essential Road Transport.
Even the most law-abiding driver might feel a shiver down the spine when spotting this speed camera at the roadside.
As well as detecting speeding, this trailer is packed with gizmos that check number plates against police databases to make sure your insurance and tax are up to date.
It also measures the distance between vehicles to spot tailgating and takes pictures of the inside of the car – to make sure you are wearing a seat belt.
The trailer-mounted device - the first to detect multiple offences at the same time - is connected to police computers via GPS and can instantly process prosecutions.

GPS is a one way transmission from space to the receivers, it cannot be used to pass information back to somewhere else, I think it should read:
"is connected to police computers via GPRS and can instantly process prosecutions." notice the small change.
With some areas having inadequate funds to run the existing camera network and certain others reducing the numbers of cameras again to reduce costs, one has to wonder where the funding to pay for a contraption like this is going to come from - Mike |

D'ye know, I've read that article several times and for the life of me I can see no reference to connecting to police computers (be it GPS or GPRS) and no reference to instantly processing prosecutions. I shudder gone to specsavers I suppopse. ![Confused](modules/Forums/images/smiles/icon_confused.gif) _________________ Dennis

good. the more untaxed (ergo uninsured) drivers who are off the road, the better. likewise those not wearing seatbelts and/or talking on mobile phones.

It should really read 'is connected to police computers via SATELLITE LINK and can instantly process prosecutions', but the reliable? Daily Mail article does make (incorrect) reference to GPS along with a nice close up picture of the trailer and equipment.
Note I posted this article at 1.30am this morning whilst feeling a touch tired. _________________ Ian.

I would expect it to use GPS in order to record where it was and more importantly an accurate traceable time stamp but not for much else - Mike |

Can't see anything that looks like a satellite phone aerial in the picture, but that is not conclusive. _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]

I'll bet it "communicates" just like the present arrangements, namely a plod or equivalent sitting in that towing vehicle with a radio link to others up the road, the only difference this setup captures not one but several offences - just another variation on ANPR if you ask me. _________________ Dennis

Here's the official website of the ASSET project.
If this gets off the ground after trials it could even include Thermal Imaging cameras - Monitoring the safety status of critical vehicle components like brakes, bearings and wheels. This appears to be aimed mainly at HGVs.
Trials continue until 2012 with the first live cameras expected to be deployed in Europe sometime in 2013.
It is being funded by the EU _________________ Ian.

So you could get a letter that might say: "You are being prosecuted for tail-gating and not wearing a seat-belt. PS your nearside rear tyre could use a bit of air'. _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]
