Apologies for asking a question that some research would have certainly answered, but I have to fulfil an urgent request from a daughter.
She wants to give a satnav as a present to a friend and it must use a Homer Simpson voice. As far as I can see this limits us to TomTom, which I have no experience of, having used Garmin, Magellan etc for years.
As far as I can see the only TomToms within our price range locally are the Start and a One IQR. Will both of these load different voices? Is either one better? I see Halfords have the Start with full European maps for the same price as the UK version. Is the only difference the mapping?
Very grateful for any quick guidance as this has been thrust on me and the purchase has to be made within the next couple of hours. |

To get the Homer Simpson voice you need to connect the TT to Home and pay for it as a download. As far as I recall it will be between £3.99 and £6.99 for a one off purchase. Any TT model should be able to get it. _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]

Don't forget that to load the voice, you'll need to connect to a pc running TomTom HOME and that will require you to register an e-mail address to associate with the device.
If it's a gift, you'll need the recipient's e-mail address, I would think. _________________ Ric - TomTom 520 DEAD - Passed to the great traffic jam in the sky. Now using Maps & Waze on Samsung Galaxy S4 + CamerAlert of course! |

Having just bought a second car ( I know profligacy!) I now want a smaller/ less specced unit for it. I'm thinking of the start UK model. It only needs UK mapping my 2XL takes care of our european needs. What it must have is updateable poi's for the pgps camera database and my custom poi's.
Does the latest Start model allow this? I've read on here that some TT models don't allow custom/user defined poi's |

Forget the START then, it can be made to support custom POIs but it's a work-around and I wouldn't recommend it.
I note that TomTom have refurb ONE devices for under £70 that would offer all you need. Even if you bought a new map (and they may come with a voucher for one in the box) they'd still be cheaper AND better specified than a START.
TotalPDA also sell Refurb models and have a ONE XL with EU maps for £79.99. _________________ Darren Griffin |
